as in, the ability to learn, comprehend, and assess information or situations/surroundings?

i was dicsussing this with a friend a while back and as soon as i mentioned it to him he fully agreed and felt the exact same way I did without me even telling him my opinion

imo, in the 5-6 years i've been smoking, never has my ability to learn changed, i've continued to go to school and continued at the same pace and ability the whole time, never have I ever been like "hmm this problem is way above my head" or "hmm i dont know any resources or have the ability to solve this problem"

the only thing it's really probably changed is my drive and laziness, but other then that I can honestly say it hasnt had any sort of effect over the course of my smoking, I could go out on a limb and say even perhaps it has been beneficial

with all this though i'm not talking about the mental aspects of "Oh weed has opened my eyes to a whole new world" or "Now i see clearly with MJ guiding me"

i'm just talking about the lower level aspects, nothing spiritual

not my ability to learn or retain valuable information.

at times it has seemed to affect short-term memory, though, and definitely my motivation at times. its a lot more fun to smoke pot than take extra classes or get a second job...

but i do what i need to do...i could do more, but i get by alright. i'd say drinking has effected me more than weed has in this regard. cause once i have a beer or two too many without intending to, i am pretty much set to stay at home and do nothing. can't go drive around.

with weed if i get to stoned at least i CAN still do something, and with the proper motivation i get shit done just as well stoned as sober.

It honestly feels like it has increased my mental abilities..

I have noticed negative effects like short-term loss and minor laziness, but those are acute effects of the drug. As soon as it wears off or you quit those things come back.

But in the long term it feels like it has really opened my mind in a way, like stripped biases and preconceived notions that I know everything, and I have learned so much from that. Socially and academically I think it has just really increased capacities and desires to learn.

    Same.

Before, I would immediately jump in and argue my point till the death. Now, I'm so much more interested in seeing things from more than one angle, and I try to put myself in others shoes a lot more often, and assess things that way.

It has definitely increased my capability to be more open, and more understanding. I try not to pass judgement so quickly, and it has made me chew on information for a while before putting my foot down and saying this is what I think...

I wouldn't say it has made me smarter, just more willing to assess/understand things in more of an open-minded way. Basically, thinking out of the box.

Which is one of the many, many reasons I love mary jane. :)

haha a prime example is last week me and 2 buddies went to go see a movie, beforehand we blazed, then after we blazed again

during the session, my buddy brought up 2 things which he really wanted to send me via computer when he got home, 5 minutes later we tried to remeber the first thing, of which he specifically told friend A to remeber, it took us like 10 minutes and a whole lot of retracing to figure it out hahah

It has not changed my mental ability, the only effect it has had on me is increased and fairly constant minor paranoia. which i have learned to cope with. I don't think that there is any other explanation for it apart from excessive drug consumption, as most people don't think too much when they see a van with blacked out windows in the car park opposite their house.

Oh well, my own fault really. Probably would change the past if I could...

well i smoke since i was 13 and i guess i turned out to be more or less different from what i could have been if i didn`t start smoking back then, but i don`t think weed changed my mental ability and intelligence.

I'd say it's definitely altered my mental capabilities. I started smoking when I was 15. I graduated HS @ the age of 13, and started college @ 14. I graduated with my associate's degree the day before I turned 16...now...I can't remember almost anything I learned. The only things I remember are the things that matter to me most. My common sense and logic...COMPLETELY gone. :hang:

I also think that it has made me a more open person and enhanced my desire to learn. I was always willing to listen to new points of view and loved the idea of learning/experiencing new things, but since I've been smoking those aspects of my personality have increased.
Intellectually I don't think it has affected me beyond small problems caused by very mild short-term memory issues.

it's rare that anyone remembers all the things they learned in school. if you don't use it, you lose it. it's as simple as that. diet and exercise, both mental and physical, have a much greater affect on me than smoking herb ever has. having said all that, everyone's different.

from what I can tell, it had no effect on my mental ability
I've always been lazy, and I've always had a shitty/finicky memory

it seems to have opened my mind a bit, made me think a lot more liberally
and it made me care less about the things society told me to care about, and focus more on the things I actually wanted to care about
but I also blame hipforums on that

one thing weed definitely did do, is make me more outgoing and help me become more confident and comfortable in my own skin. and I am totally grateful for that

I would say that marijuana probably helps me actually stay focused on my college work...the only time I did bad in school was when I was coming to high school drunk, stoned and trippin out on something all the time....but now that im back to just straight mary jane i can say it really helps me concentrate in class.

I've smoked weed for 7 years, chronically. That means everyday, or the MAJORITY of days at least.
Yesterday, I started a new job (trial day) working on spring coils for Volvo (connecting lorries to cabins).
I proved myself, picked up the work fast and got taken on full time.
And I will still continue to smoke pot as I did - just when I've finished work!
Pot is way overrated by people who cannot hack the chemical shift in the brain from both ''Unstoned mind (fully working brain with constructive thought) -->>> Cannabis induced thought'' and vice versa.
These people are the wimps that get psychologically dependant and declare themselves 'addicted' to weed.
