Has anyone here made their own salvia extract?

I've briefly read bits and pieces about salvia divinorum extraction, but I was wondering if anyone has actually made the extract themselves and how well did the process go from start to finish (actually using the stuff)?

It's quite easy to make yourself. Unless you totally dont understand what the process does, it's pretty hard to screw up. Working with solvents is definitely the challenge if any, as they are generally flammable and/or toxic.

Personally, I like to use ethanol (drinking alcohol) in the form of Everclear. It can be used to make extract fortified leaves, crude extract and tincture. It is not very dangerous as far as toxicity, but is not as effective as pure acetone for speed and solvency.

Regardless of the solvent that is used, the most important thing is making sure all of your solvent has evaporated off your finished product if you are planning on smoking it.

If ingesting a tincture be sure you have used a non-toxic solvent. Propanol and acetone are not good as a beverage :)

Would pepermint extract work as a solvent? I've been wanting to make a tinicure, but don't wanna have to buy everclear if i can avoid it....can cause more questions than i want to be asked...I think i'll try that some day if i don't buy pre made first.

You need to use very high proof ethanol if you dont want to extract for a long time. Lower proof alcohol isn't as good of a solvent and has alot of water which will disolve stuff you dont want into it.

Reagent grade acetone makes a good extract, but it can be hard to find

I've made extracts quite a few times... Never anything over 20x though, as it requires too much starting material (at least 250g to make about 10g of fortified leaf).

You're welcome to go see my thread over at Salviasource.org as it's chronicaling my latest 10x extract.

There are many good guides on the internet for doing this too. Look up the "chilled acetone extraction". Works every time!

I like the ethanol personally... I just tried a basic ethanol extract from a couple ounces of salvia leaves and just pored it onto some organic sage and dried it. This was decent for a little experiment, lol! I also like the ethanol becuase you can make "Green Dragon" tincture with it as well!
