Everyone has seen the "FBI warning" at the start of movies whenever they have played a VHS or DVD movie. I know people have been busted at flea markets for selling illegal copies of such movies, but what are the chances of being busted just for making a single copy of a movie you rented from Hollywood Video for strictly personal use, and does anyone know if that actually happening?

I am not advocating such things. I am merely wanting to know of people have ever been busted for it and it was not selling illegal copies at a flea market.

well i thought that there was like a block on the DVD so that you couldnt burn it, but im sure if your not selling it to recieve a profit ..you probably wont get arrested.

Then next time 4 of your friends come over you all can watch it, cheating the movie people out of thier cut as well as the rental place being mad, as just jacked thier second rental of the same movie to you.

Fuck Hollywood Video. If business can't keep up with technology, well, its nobody's fault when it dies.

You are more likely to get arrested if you are selling them and it requires a tip off from someone. (unless you run a market stall whereby anyone could be watching what you are doing).

I do know someone that has been arrested for selling pirate dvds but they were also busted for selling drugs. Ironically the fine was bigger for the selling of dvds.

How can you feel sorry for the film industry if their films are pirated when you see MTV cribs and there are actors on there in multimillion pound homes, with basketball courts and 10 cars outside. Take a pay cut dudes.

One of my friends as been doing illegal stuff such as making multiple copies of dvds she rented and she hasn't been caught yet. It's not like she sells them so I don't see what's wrong with it (other than cheating the movie buisness out of their money, of course but I feel no pity towards them).

Well they don't want your pity, they want your money. It takes many people a huge amount of work and a huge amount of money to make a movie. And yes, there are a few key people reaping the lion's share of profits but there are also a ton more who work on movies for dirt pay, and virtually no job security since every shoot is an individual project and once it's done you're looking for a job all over again. One of those people is me.

It's practically impossible for anyone to find out that you're making copies for personal use unless you tell everyone. And even then, I doubt that the video store manager has the time to bother with investigating the matter. The only way for you to get caught is to either sell a lot of copies or have them found while you're getting busted for something else. Avoid that and you won't have a problem.

Someone asked the question once. If it's illegal to tape something off the tv why have a record button on the vcr/dvd player?

The actual copyright law for recording off the tv or radio states that you are entitled to keep the recording for a maximum of 7 days. Who records stuff off the tv anymore anyway. Most things are repeated 4 or 5 times a week anyway

Making copies is not a criminal offence, you will not be arrested for it. You might be sued, but you won't be arrested or do jail time for copying copywritten material.

On the other hand, selling copies on the street may get you arrested for unliscened vending or disorderly conduct or whatever "say so" charge the officer comes up with.

College students throughout the country are being sued for rediculous sums for unauthorized copying. Both music and video.
