Here in the U.S. today is Labor Day. (Also Canada, I believe) Labor Day is a federal holiday started in 1894 to celebrate workers and trade unions. A Socialist worker's day.
Damn...that history makes me feel bad for day drinking and grilling steaks with old friends. But what else do you do on labor day?
It could also be considered a celebration of their successes. For a while unions taught politicians and business leaders that workers deserved more than toiling long hours, across generations for barely enough pay to survive. A lot of hard fought lessons that ended child labor, standardized weekends and strike efforts coordinated with boycotts (and sabotage) that brought everybody to the table.
Happy holiday yall Over here, and in the rest of the world, we just do International Workers Day. May 1st.
For many years after 1935, Labor Day was synonymous with the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 which devastated South Florida with winds of up to 185 mph
there are four of them; the winter and summer solstice and the fall and spring equinox, though its still up to us to celebrate them or not. in sparks nevada, kindof contiguous with reno, the national barbique cook off is held, with barbique resteraunts competing with one another for ratings. kind of like and combined with a kind of street faire. yup, had some this year, as probably mentioned in another thread. couldn't afford to try all of them and my stomic isn't that big, even if i went every of the five days it lasted, from wednesday to monday. but the were good. mostly pork ribs and pulled pork.
without organized labour, call it socialist, call it what you will, we would not have such freedoms as we do. i still have vissions though, of mill hands and bar maids, dancing around a may pole on may first. and america would be a better and happier place, if eugene debs had been elected president.
I'd care about labor day if the country actually celebrated workers by paying them what they're worth, and within proportion to the cost of living.
well the country kind of does. government workers make way more than most people, for the amount of work they do.
Depends. Trump just cut pay raises for federal employees. My mother works for the government and they haven't been given a raise there in years.
