Wow, thats amazing! I live in an ex council owned flat that doesn't have heating or double glazed windows. Theres no communal garden, although there's a patch of grass and a tree out the front. Oh and I have really loud neighbours right above me! I'm moving to the US!
MamaPeace, Sweetheart, My question is, is there any reason on God's green Earth that YOU have too live in London? Also, before you lost your last job, were you earning £3,000 or greater, each month? sustainability means not ending up on the street. Simple logic says that if you can't afford it, them you can't afford it. Simple. So, then the question becomes, if you monthly income is say £500 and your rent is £1000, do you need to make a decision about anything? For instance, if it were me and, if I had to stay in London and pay £800 a month in rent, I would move in 3 roommates and we'd be paying £200 per month. I make some real good money and I personnelly still wouldn't pay out that kind of rent. I like to keep what I earn, for me, and to save it for me. Not for landlord's banks. My question is, is there any reason on God's green Earth that YOU have too live in London?

I'm back from driving my son to work...all caffeinated...Wow it's been a long time since I got up this early. I've gone to bed this early plenty but I forgot all about what it's like to wake up early in the morning. It's 5:30 a.m. here.
I envy you so very much right now. I have to go get a EEG testing done today! About 1:30 p / 4:30 p your time. I can't have any caffeine for 9 hours before the test. I've hired litter bearers for the day. They'll have to carry me. You are so lucky! :sunny:
Kenny, I think its very different in the US to how it is here. I don't want to live in London, my main reason for being here is because its where I happened to be born, my family live here. I have a problem with moving too far out of the area as Lylas dad isnt very understanding and would try to make my life a living hell if I was to go somewhere else because it would mean he wouldnt have 'easy access' to seeing his daughter. Not that he tries to see her much anyway, but thats another story. I'm lonely as it is being here around people I know! I've never even seen 3000 let alone earnt it. I was on minimum wage, earnt about 600 a month. I don't have room for other people, we have one room (baby's room) that isn't slept in because she sleeps in my bed but its got all her things in it, theyd have no where else to go. Plus, because I'm renting from my landlord on a contract I don't actually think I'd be allowed to move anyone in, I don't think that is my descision. It took me so long to be accepted by a landlord to live here, I was searching for 10 months before I found this place, I don't care about area or the standard of the flat, just about having a roof over my head. Your place sounds like a hotel!! I moan too much!
How is your son doing Aerianne? I continue to send positive energy your way. MamaPeace You are in my thoughts as well. I hope you can get some assistance today. Keep us posted. My rent is $395 for a one bedroom but I don't live in the best part of town. My rent does include heat, water, trash among a few other things. Also I am allowed to have pets here. I have been here 23 years and walked to work before I retired. I am not planning on moving anytime too soon although a new landlord purchased the building in January so who knows what might happen. Not all Americans live in the lap of luxury. Thinking of you a lot. Remember to take care of yourself.
I've replied Kenny. Thank you Spectacles. I think a big problem is that my rent doesn't cover any of the extras like electricity or water, so that equals more money out. Not allowed pets but I have them anyway Do you guys pay an equivalent to council tax? To your state or government? I feel like council tax is such an evil tax on top of everything else.
Okay. So, let me get this straight. 600 a month is was you use to make. Now you have no job. 800 is the rent. Do you see anything wrong here? Okay. Let's say you don't get that. I'll try again. You said that you're looking for a job which means that you don't have a job. £0 income £800 rent. NOW, do you see a problem? Trust me, there's a problem. Stillcrazy, please help her with the math part on it, Okay? Here's what I see. Something more realistic must be done.
Kenny, I'm sure she receives state benefits if she has a child and no job, that would be housing benefit, child allowance etc., but there is obviously a shortfall. It's not that she has 0 income, it's just not enough. MamaPeace will ring me tonight and we can have a chat about it.
Thank you and everyone else. He is doing okay but did talk to me about having some mental cravings and being unable to go to sleep well last night. I think he is going to have to cut down his late day caffeine intake to go along with his new chemistry. Yesterday was his only "off" day in the new schedule of going to meetings/counseling 6 days per week. He had half and energy drink on the way to his daughters softball practice last night and then tried to come home and jump straight into bed. He is going to keep an over the counter sleep aid on hand in case he has trouble again. I think he'll do better if he watches his caffeine. Also the t.v. show he had on as he was trying to go to sleep was a "reality" show with lots of drinking and partying in it. It's just going to take him some time to learn what to avoid. It's all so new to him.
Dear MamaPeace. So sorry to hear about your financial difficulties.I have a reasonable amount of money coming in soon and would gladly pay off your rent for you - unfortunately this money hasn't arrived yet - I'm still waiting for it.But you obviously need to find a more long term solution.I would have thought you would be entitled to housing benefit, especially as you are a single Mother? Have you explored that avenue? I so hope you can work something out - best wishes,Fairlight.
But Kenny, in the UK if you have no income then you are entitled to 'benefits' which is what I'm living on now. They will pay your rent, or part at least, to help you until you get a job. My problem here is that, although I'm entitled to this I also live in a very high demand area, meaning the time it takes for a descision to be made based on your claim for benefits, could take longer than more rural areas. I live in a very overpopulated but underemployed part of London. My income right now is £90 a week, which is from the government, and that is the highest amount they give out to a single parent. I should technically be getting more help until I can find a job, but its taken about two months already since I put my claim in for more help, with my rent and bills. When I moved in here I had no job. I lost my job when babyp was 15 weeks old, I went back to work when she was ten weeks old, I had to quit my job because i no longer had anyone to take care of her whikst i was working. When I moved in, it was with her dad, he paid the rent and bills, but then he left us, which is why I've been thrown into this situation. My other problem is that if I actually managed to find a job then I'd have to pay out around £50 a day for the babys childcare, so it kind of puts me in a situation where I say 'Do I work everyday and earn enough to put babyp in childcare knowing that that is all I'd beable to do with my earnings, or do I stay like this and care for her myself and carry on living on benefits until she turns three and gets 15 hours a week of childcare for free (that is the same for all children, three years old they become entitled to 15 hours a week). So its kind of a lose lose situation whatever I do.
I have to agree with Kenny here mama - you have to live within your means even if that means moving out of London. If Lyla's father is so kean that you stay within range ask him for help to support her! If he doesn't contribute financially it really is none of his business what you do. You said the baby's room was free right now because she slept with you? Get a tenant and have them pay one month's rent at least up front. Should keep the baillifs off your back for a while. When I lived in Britain a mother with children has to be given some kind of temporary accomodation if they found themselves homeless and as far as I am aware that still stands. I really hope things work out for you!
MamaPeace.Have you thought about going to the Citizen's Advice Bureau? Then you would have legal advice as to your situation, and someone to work on your behalf. They have helped me in the past.
Good luck with the council. They often have someone who works to prevent homelessness who might be able to give Housing Benefit a kick up the arse.
