Um. Is it meant to be happy? It's about someone being hammered to a bit of wood Isn't it about time we banned Easter? I mean it's pretty tasteless really isn't it. We celebrate someone being nailed up violently and then munch our chocolate eggs. Um. What? What does easter mean to you? Anything? Anyone? Anyone? :leaving:
Absolutely nothing, in facts it's a pain in the arse. The small town I live in celebrates the whole Easter week with processions and all sorts and we have thousands of visitors. you should try getting to the shop for a carton of milk. Fucking nightmare. Not criticizing the right of anyone to openly display their faith but not when it encroaches on my ability to go about my business in peace!
You'll find that it's actually Good Friday that celebrates that. Easter Sunday is the day of magic when he walked around even though he was dead (supposedly), though there are covered tombs in Isreal that tend to prove otherwise. Sadly, we couldn't ban Easter. This would open the flood gates of all religious ceremonies/holidays being banned, and well some can be quite fun, such as Christmas. As far as tasteless goes, I passed a church the other day which had a sign out front promoting their Easter activities and it said quite clearly: "Friday, Crucifixion 7:30pm". If Jesus did walk the earth, and was crucified (stepping away from the 'magic' for a minute), do you really think he'd want to be reminded every year of how he died? Not much. It's a time to go hang around family and have a meal and chocolate. Which if you get down to it, happens quite frequently (for me at least) as it is. It is good for people to remember, that Easter started out as a Pagan holiday Ostara. Though, this year they don't line up (as Ostara was on the Vernal Equinox back towards the end of March). Ostara is the celebration of Spring, and the birth of new life. Though I'm not actually pagan myself, this makes a lot more sense to me. Celebrating the birth of new things and a symbolic rebirth of ourselves to head into a new year. I mean, sure there's New Year; but we all know that January and February are a bit shite. So it's good to recognize all the lovely prettiness that comes about at the beginning of Spring. Easter itself, I could take it or leave it. Even the chocolate doesn't thrill me anymore, after learning all about the child trafficking that goes on to produce it.
Easter to me is celebrated on the day of the eqinox, accually. It's a celebraton of new life, of fertility, and a hopefully warm spring to come. Today, easter Sunday means little to me, not being a Christian.
Well obviously we'd ban christmas too. We could still have the holiday, just call it something inclusive and inspirational like "Chocolate and Universal Non-denominational Thanksgiving for Springfest"
Finally getting somewhere now aren't we? Although, living in the politically correct environment of this day and age, I am sure there would be a small amount of Kiting enthusiasts who now would feel segregated- and that's just not on. Soo, this could be a suggestion? Winter And Non-Kite Related Event for Reciprocal Sharing With Kites.
I can't. No one really can, I was just saying thats what the holiday is supposed to be about as opposed to celebrating his death. No faith trap lol. I'm not into religion enough to preach.
i seriously think gods pissd as fuck and is trying to get a message across... haiti, chile, and now where i live in socal a 7.0 quake just rockd the shit outta us, but it was bitchin
i was gonna say that, the nailing happend on the friday, and i guess what "we" are celebrating is the rising. easter and the whole christian holidays and celebrations dont mean much to me at all, because i was brought up strictley catholic, and having it all drilled into me that much, it turnd me verry against everything. now im enjoying reading up on alternative religions, and meanings to what has been written in the old and new testament.
I've rethought this. I don't actually want to exclude the religionists from easter since they did entirely create it by hammering their god up onto a bit of planking. I think we do need to make it for both the religionites and for the atheites though, so that nobody feels excluded from the seasonal celebration. I will accept the retention of the term "easter" because what it says to me is just "chocolate" and "slow painful death of a deity" and nobody finds either chocolate or hammering people to bits of wood offensive. So we'll rename easter as: "Annual Religious and Secular Easter Season"
lol...what it really is today, just like xmas, is a money spinner for the retail industry. i think just verry few ppl actually see it for its proper reason (purpose of the celebration.) you could call them religious extremists really...today,.... just like the ppl that did the hammering then, and as jesus was properbley to them. in the book im reading atm, the spiritual/alternative view is, that when jesus was up on the cross, and he said "my god, my god why has thou forsaken me?" he was actually referring to what he thought was the loss of his soul. its good to think about diffrent angles and views of things sometimes. you dont havve to be a complete non believer.
I think you would find this to be much, much different if you were living in the States as opposed to the UK. In the UK, despite having ties to the Church of England, the culture is quite secular. After having lived in the States, it's much different over there. Not saying there isn't the whole "money spinning" aspect; but people do see the holiday for it's "proper reason". It's not just about chocolate and bunnies... those are just the only things I get out of it.
