My brother who's 7 doesn't wash his hands after going to the bathroom, and i tell him every time, but my mom actually gets mad at me for doing this (she's really stupid). What can I tell her so she actually sees the point in washing hands?

Um, because it's part of having a healthy hygiene? My oldest son, who is 5 years old, never has to be told to wash his hands, he knows that it's just something you should do, and he does it without any fuss because he doesn't want "poopy germs" on his hands. ;)

Doesn't your mother wash her hands after she uses the restroom? That's kind of disturbing if she doesn't, considering she is the one who more than likely prepares your food!

    Peace...

i remember doing a black light hand washing example in something i was involved. on top of already growing up with a mission against germs and a nurse mother this definatly reafirmed what i already practised.

not washing hands is how some hepatitis is spread. (my community was hit fairly hard and my brother got it at school.)

Well I actually do prefer my son not to wash his hands in a public restroom after he just goies pee. I do this to, with lots of squatting maneuvers and tp. We make a big deal not to touch Anything, and if you do, it's washign time! Perhaps you could just yell really loudly.
Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeecause sometimes I dont' have any good advice

    How about this,
The national institute for world health, the american academy of pediatrics, and the american medical association all agree

Hand washing is the Number 1 way to prevent the spread of disease!!!!
Like I tell my kids, unless you like to be sick and "pee out you butt" (my kids way of saying diareah) you gots to wash your hands!

    Busmama hit it!

Becca, if you don't want your child handling the faucets in public bathrooms, you might want to start carrying antibacterial wipes for hands. I do this, and although some might consider me a germaphobe, I have SEEN those black light demonstrations of the spread of bacteria and viruses. A person can even get sick from not washing after wiping their OWN bottom. (An other reason to wash before oral sex, if I am not getting too OT!) You can transmit germs meant only for the END of your digestive tract to the begining (your mouth) and that is the cause of a lot of what people refer to as "stomach flu." Washing is really neccesary. Even if it is just an antibacterial wipe until you can get home and wash properly.

hmm i don't know what to tell her but get some basic handsoap and put a little food coloring and glitter in it (the large un sharp kind). you just have to make things fun for kids it's the same philosophy as cheerios in the toliet when potty training.

Well my brother is old enough to not care for that. I mean there's lots of soap, but he doesn't wash his hands. Sometimes he will when I'm around, but I know he doesn't when I"m not. My mom doesn't always wash her hands either. Anyway, she just says she's not concerned with it. I really wish she was, because its disgusting.

Primus remind me not to eat your mom's cooking. I'm sorry. She's an adult, she should be more knowlegable about hygeine.

Yes I do carry antibacterial wipes and we always use them like that. That's just a game we play with public bathrooms, and if you don't touch Anything, I think you're good. Anyway, there's advice-- wipes! Or that hand sanitizer stuff that you don't have to get your hands wet. I love the public bathrooms that dispense that stuff with a sensor-- you don't have to touch anything, and then you still can sanitize your hands! But just keep harping on it, not pressuring but making it an issue with you-- eventually kids stop rebelling and start being just like you if they intrinsically agree with the view-- and who wouldn't intrinsically agree with washing your hands? Well, except in public bathrooms. It's good excercize to open door handles with your feet :)
Just don't let him touch you, touch your stuff, go in your room or go anywhere with you until he washes his hands. Like saying no dessert unless you eat your vegetables.
But don't worry Too Much about it-- the germs won't kill him and getting sick might teach him his best lesson. And you'll be able to lord it over him that you won't get sick because you wash your hands.

I'm the same way. I have taught my kids to go without touching anything and to flush the toilet with their foot and to use wipes to wash their hands once we're out of the public restroom. However, if I am not carrying wipes (I almost always have them with me) I have them wash in the restroom sink.

We're the same way regarding public restrooms. I really hate using them, but when you've got to go, you've got to go. Especially me, as my bladder is pretty much shot! ;)

Except, we wash our hands after using a public restroom, and many times, we use the water-free, antibacterial hand sanitizer that I carry in a little bottle in my diaper bag. I'm kind of paranoid about germs when it comes to being out in public. I won't let my kids ride in a shopping cart either. I bring along my light-weight double stroller for the twins and attach a basket to the handlebars if I only need a few items. If I need more than a few items, then I wait until my husband comes home from work so that I can do the shopping myself. You just never know where people's hands have been.

    Hugs...

Why don't you just wipe the handle bar of the cart down with your antibacterial sanitizer before putting them in? Also, Bath & Body Works makes antibacterial wet wipes (fyi). But be careful using that stuff, it can actually lead to your children having a lowered immune system and germs that grow resistant to the antibacterial stuff (essentially they just get stronger so that the hand stuff won't kill them anymore)...

I'm still paranoid ever since I read the story in the newspaper here some months back about a toddler who ended up dying from "catching" some virus from a shopping cart. It freaked me out. Don't ask me what the virus was, because I hadn't heard of it before and I can't remember what the heck it was now! lol

Anyway, the paper here also ran an article on how dirty shopping carts were and how people were at risk of contamination and how they should be careful. Probably an unneccesary scare-tactic, but it freaked me out none-the-less. ;)

    Hugs...

(Hangs head in shame) I clean shopping carts with antibacterial wipes when I am in public. Especially those ones with the truck or car on the front, that Sage HAS to ride in. Blech, you have NO idea how other people handle their kid's hygeine.

In my house, however, I do NOT use antibacterial stuff. It IS hard on your skin, and in our own house, we just use soap and water. But out in public, YECH.

That's how I am too. We'll use them in public when needed, but we try not to over use them.

ditto here. You just don't know what is out there.
When my girls were babies a friend gave me a cute little washable fabric thingy that fit right over the cart seat and handles. I loved that thing. I think you can still get them from One Step Ahead. No more worries about what was on the cart, or the hazards of antibacterial items.

Obvious hygiene aside, I don't get why she'd get mad about it. That's kind of odd.
