Has anyone ever tried haggis? Even though it sounds disgusting I'm adventurous and have always wanted to try it. I have some Scottish blood in my family tree and want to explore the culture a little more. However, haggis is banned in the US by the USDA. There are some domestically produced knock-offs you can get in the US but they lack a key ingredient: sheep lungs. I'd rather try the real thing. Anyone want to send me some? Is it worth trying?
No, it's not a delicacy I'd recommend for trolls. Don't be put off by the ingredients, haggis is a very heart warming meal especially if served with neeps and tatties. Traditionally it's served with mashed turnips and potatoes, but if you go into a chip shop you can also get deep fried battered haggis, which is also very nice. You can also get black pudding suppers that are similar and are basically made from congealed blood, which also sounds disgusting in theory but actually is quite delicious as well. I'd still eat these things if I was a carnivore, but the vegetarian version of haggis is pretty nice and not too unlike the real thing. Not sure how they make it but onion, oatmeal and suet are a major part of the ingredients of the real thing. I didn't realise it was illegal in America, that's pretty dumb considering the entire country is infested with Scottish migrants. That's almost as dumb as banning hemp. As long as everyone can get their daily dose of trans fats down the local KFC though..
I love haggis.. There is a sliced meat you can get called Haslet, it's very similar.. often called duck something?
I used to eat haslet. Wouldn't say it was that similar to haggis since haggis is served hot, but it's kind of like it, minus the oats.
I had vegetarian haggis for the first time quite recently. I was surprised at how good it was! I haven´t eaten meat for many years but, yeah, remember haggis neeps and tatties very well!
Something about this thread being in the "munchies" forum made me giggle. Haggis just doesn't seem like something you "munch" on, ya know?
Scotland is about to start exporting haggis to Canada again, after a 46 year ban. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-41665690
What's more disgusting about eating a sheep's lungs/liver than any other part of an animals body? I bet you've probably never even tried it. It's fucking delicious! And that's from a vegetarian.
Sure. It just had a bunch of veggies in it. Nothing against vegetarians but you can't make a vegetarian everything.
A big part of haggis is vegetables, so veggie haggis is quite a lot like the real thing actually, and it's fucking delish. You're loss if you can't bring yourself to eat it. I personally love the stuff.
I didn't say that I didn't like it. I have actually eaten the stuff and it's not bad. But if you take out all the animal parts it's not the same thing. It's just a bunch of veggies.
