a gyno will do a pap smear, which will sound really scarry, but it isn't bad once you're going through it.

they check for changes in your cervix that could indicate problems, or show early stages of cervical cancer, by scraping a small sample of cells . dysplasia, for example, has no symptoms. they check for stds too, if you request them to do so. it's very important!

and, what is probably most important to you right now, they prescribe birth control!! :D

i cannot say that it would be best for you to tell your mom, as i don't know her or your relationship... but i can say that if you absolutely cannot tell your mom you're having sex, then check out the local planned parenthood. they have a sliding scale and your exam might be free. make sure the number you give them to call with your results isn't one your mom will answer or check the messages to. discuss their confidentiality, like maybe you can come in for the results, or you call them in a few weeks, etc. also, if your parents have health insurance and you use it without telling them, they will find out. they'll get a statement in the mail from the insurance co. with a name of the health care provider, and if they see 'planned parenthood' they'll know. pp will probably do the exam for anywhere from free to $15 if you're a minor, unemployed and without insurance.

PS: You posted this in lve&sex, too... so this post is just copied from my reply there.. but i also made another post over there about what to expect during the exam.

Hun, it is very important to go to a gynocologist if you are sexually active. Even if you are VERY careful, it is possible to transmit STDs. Better safe than sorry.

you know, you should tell your mom that you have done some research on the topic, and that you'd like to start seeing a gynocologist BEFORE you are sexually active. many girls do! it's a good thing to start doing early. your sexual health doesn't just become a concern AFTER you have sex. my 15 year old sister isn't sexually active, but she went to a gynocologist and the pap was abnormal, so they did some tests and found out she has a condition called PCOS (polycystic ovarian sydrome).

my mom tried to be the "cool mom" and tell me never to be afraid about telling her if i was sexually active, but i didn't want to tell her! that was a private matter to me and i didn't exactly want to tell my mommy about it...it doesn't matter if you're a minor, your sex life is your business only. it is your body, and it is up to you to take care of it. you should tell your mom you want to see a gynocologist and if she asks you if you've been having sex, it's your call what to tell her. you can lie and tell her no, you can tell the truth, or you can just say, "that is private and i'm not going to tell you." good luck!

VERY IMPORTANT TO GO TO THE GYNO!!!!
I was in the same situation as you are when I was living at home. My mom always talked to me about having sex and how I need to tell her if I start having it. So I did and she put me on birth control right away. My second visit to the Gyno and I found out that I had cancer in my cervix. (very scarey!) They took care of it before it spread but it was still scarey! And I didn't even know it was there until the Gyno told me!!!!!! So please get a check up.....for your sake if no one elses!!!!
    Good luck!

yeah sweetie i agree with the above, you should definitely go to the gyno.. Not just because you are having sex but so you can get a pap smear and get an exam...
