When a mass murder happens there is usually a cry for banning guns as if they are the problem and getting rid of them will "obviously" solve the problem. Perusing the internet I just ran across a connection, other than guns, as perhaps a cause for the murders, psychiatric drugs. It seems that the vast majority of these murderers have been taking anti-psychotic and antidepressant drugs and that the increase in mass murders seems to parallel the increase in the use of psychiatric drugs. So what do you think, ban guns or ban anti-psychotic and antidepressant drugs? Or maybe before you can buy a gun, a background check to find out if you have been taking psychiatric drugs ?
I've just been researching violence in history and I've come across a startling fact. There was violence in the past well before guns were invented. I've read about things like the Crusades for instance, sword and axe they were fought by, a lot of violence, millions killed. And this was all before guns were even invented.
background checks dont cover everything. you get a rifle for xmas when your 16. how does taking an anti depressants when your 22 yrs old, prevent you from getting a gun that you already had?
Yup, these mass shooters are almost always on some kind of anti-depressant, but you never hear about banning those, because the media that tells us we need to curtail 2nd Amendment rights is the same media that is funded by these pharmaceutical giants which peddle this poison to people.
This can very well be a related issue in some cases. If you just stop taking those antidepressants you can go through some wild freakout sessions. To the point where you can't tell dreaming from reality... Been there, Done that,
OlderWaterBrother Where is huge demand to ban all guns? Definitely ban all assault rifles. Killers tend to be psychotic? Wow! what a surprise. I'm not sure about a link to an increase in mass murders seems to parallel the increase in the use of psychiatric drugs. I don't think taking anti-psychotic and antidepressant drugs invariably makes you want to kill people. Ban assault rifles. Definitely look at a person taking those drugs and the family members too.
Having grown up in a predrug (big pharm) neighborhood (south Texas) where almost everyone over 14 had guns no mass murders to speak, I too suspect our current 'take a pill' culture is a big part of the puzzle.
Why ban any guns? Interestingly we've always had psychotics and guns but only at the same time as increasing use of psychiatric drugs has there also been a similar increase in mass murders. No, not invariably, some who take the drugs only kill themselves but the records seem to indicate that of those who do these mass murder almost all have taken such drugs. Again why? I agree. Perhaps also the big pharm companies that have been pushing them as well. PS Since guns have been banned in your country have people stopped being murdered? Have they stopped being murdered with guns?
I don't like assault rifles. I don't know if that is true. My point was that many mass murderers had/have mental health issues. I don't think taking their medication made them then go out and murder people. Perhaps not taking them did. Thankfully there are not that many mass killings in the grand scheme of things. Perhaps the question should be: How beneficial is medication with regards to mental illness. I don't like assault rifles. Yeah why not. It wouldn't hurt. No. It's a lot less likely. “The US is very different from Britain with its love affair with guns.” Jack Straw Imho, it's the attitude towards guns that needs to change, not necessarily draconian gun control.
Almost twice the amount of people are killed every year by bare hands, than by all types of rifles combined. Just sayin.
Shouldn't that be: Nearly 1000 times as many people are killed every year by bare hands, than by all types of rifles combined. How many people are killed every year by bare hands?
According to what I just read, in 2010 358 people were killed by all types of rifles. 745 people were killed by bare hands.
I was pokin fun at your reasoning to ban them. Which was that you don't like them. I don't like celery, I propose we ban all celery
They are called semi-autos and they come in all forms. Not just rifles. Assault Rifle was a name given by the media, which many of us here know, you cant get away from. Clearly you read to much bullshit cause it always comes out in your posts. Stop using the word assault rifle, people who use that term only show their ignorance to those who actually know info about guns. I can throw apples at you and you can call them assault apples Same with tin foil, a basketball, a baseball bat, anything i could assault you with. If you ban 'assault rifles' then you have to ban everything else that is bring produced, because everything is semi-auto, even shotguns. Anti-gun people remind me of those who have obama, or presidential stickers on the back of their car, nothing more can say 'im a sheep' when you talk like this.
Here's an interesting list, provided by the FBI... http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/uc...u.s.-2010/tables/10shrtbl08.xls#disablemobile I get that some people don't like guns. What I dont understand is why they go after the ones that kill the least amount of people every year. And not by a small margin either. Like Broony said, I think it has to do with their ignorance when it comes to firearms.
