So today I bought some peyote seeds, and I've been reading up on how to grow them from seed, and I was wondering if you guys had any input on a few questions I have. 1) Soil. From what I've read, it appears that peyote like slightly acidic soil. Some guides say that using the store bought cacti mixes should work fine, others claim that you need to buy some things separately and mix your own. What do you guys think? Also, most pictures I see have a layer of rocks on top of the soil, but all the guides don't seem to say anything about that. Do I put them on after I transplant the young peyote to individual pots? 2) Watering during seedling stage. Some guides say that the best way is to put a bag over the top of the pot while the seeds are growing, and other seem to say that it's best to occasionally dip the pot into a jug of water, with a pot that has holes on the bottom. I figure the best way would be to start with fairly moist soil with a bag over the top, and as they grow poke a few holes in the bag so they can get used to the "outer" climate. 3) Sunlight/heat during seedling stage. Some guides say that heating the bottom of the plant pot while the seedlings grow is better while some say it's most likely detrimental. I was thinking I would heat the bottoms of the pots while the cacti are still young (to about 28-29C) Then, do they need much sunlight while still at a seedling stage? I haven't found much information other than that the cacti will get burned if they get too much sun; is this the case for seedlings as well? Thanks in advance for any help :cheers2:
cactus soil from any garden store is fine. test it out in a pot by itself and pour water in it to be sure it drains well. i would not give them direct sunlight, i always keep mine in the shade. can't tell you about watering from seedling stage. all mine are transplants and clones. i do water them fairly often i just make sure the soil never stays moist for more than a day. root rot is a big problem with these guys.
Thanks. :cheers2: What about a layer of rocks at the bottom/top of the pot? Know anything about that? I guess it wouldn't be so good for the seeds to be trying to grow through a layer of top rocks, anyways..
I know the rocks in the bottom is for drainage, not sure about the ones on the top. Cannbis - Under your name.. Pron. Is that for the Periodic Review of Nasioc, or something else?
Thanks. Pron = Porn. It's a joke, though. So I was gonna plant some of these peyote seeds tonight.. would anyone be interested in me taking some pictures of the process? Kind of like a grow log.
some use a layer of rocks on the bottom for good drainage, and a tiny layer of soil on top as a kind of moisture reserve. i find it's not necessary.
Grow log would be awesome! I am going to do one when I start my new mushroom spores, which will be when I get off my ass and get supplies. I consider the Periodic Review of Nasioc porn if that counts. Subie porn is the best. (I'm a boost whore)
I love grow logs myself. Makes me feel more confident in what I'm doing. though I grow shrooms, not peyote. I've got 25 buttons stashed away for when the weather warms up again.
Sure you go ahead and start a grow log, then in fifteen years when they are ready to harvest you can write a trip report. I can understand growing them for interest, but you do realize they take many, many years to grow, right?
Indeed I do. I don't really want to embark on a powerful mescaline trip yet at this age anyways. I'm going to grow these plants from scratch, fill them with love and nutrients, and then when they're mature in 5-10 years, I'll munch them down and have much more respect for them than I will if I order cactus online. And I was just thinking some people might have been interested in seeing some gradual dates when you grow from seed to cactus.. I do realize they take a while. Edit: I also figure I'll have a better chance of ingesting them in my lifetime if I start growing them now rather than later.
it doesn't really take 5 years. they are good enough to cut and eat at about 3 years old. that's according to my roadman. admittedly most of what i consume isn't from my garden and is brought up dried from the peyoteros down south. sometimes ground up. it's really hard to tell but most i would guess average 4 to 6 years old. if you graft and then repotted you could have a sizable dose in 3 years.
the older the better I have heard. NAC says wild peyote that had been growing for 50+ years was way better than what they cultivated for half that after the feds came in and cleared out the wild stuff.
Well it appears the first peyote has sprouted, and it still has the broken seed shell on the outside. Do I need to worry about removing this at all? I faintly recall reading that it should fall off by itself, but if it doesn't, you should remove the seed shell, although I can't find that information anywhere anymore.
I wouldn't mess with getting the seed shell off, it will do it on its own most likely. Congrats on your lil sproutling
just let it be for a while. congrats man you must be really proud. take good care of that medicine and it will take real good care of you.
*sniff* It feels like I just gave birth *sniff* Seriously though, thanks for all the help everyone. I'll keep you updated. Right now it seems that they're stretching and growing fairly tall.. perhaps they need more light? I'll just hold off an wait.. I have about 45 seeds left, anyways. :cheers2:
Another little peyote has started poking forward! I've started giving them a few hours of lights (some fluoro lights) Sylvania Plant Lights.. "Wide-Spectrum". It's not light enough during the winter. I'm scared I'll burn them, though, so I'm slowly getting them used to the stronger light.
