hey peeps,im after a little information if poss, i have just purchased a 600w light for my plants but am worried that it might be a little too warm for them.it is in an area about a metre square and 2metres high, also what is the ideal hight to have the light from the plant and are there any ways to keep the temp down in the cupboard

Keep a fan blowing on them at all times, fresh air is critical. As far as height goes I'd keep it 12-16 inches away from the tops. If you're using a horizontal hood I would recommend using a glass insert and keeping it cool with a blower then you won't have to worry that much about burning the tops. I have a 1000 watt light hooked up like this and I'm around 8in away from my tops.....

Watch the heat- ventilation is critical. If circulation fails, the grow room becomes an oven.

The closer to the plants the better. Hold your hand under the light at plant hieght. If a minute is uncomfortably hot for you, than it's uncomfortable for the plants. They like about the same Temp range as you do.

    HPS or MH bulb?

    Welcome, to you both.

The way I get fresh air in is by using a Dayton Blower
You can see one at the link above. I hook up dryer hose to one end as you can buy fittings that work well with them. Just have the intake somewhere close to an open window and send it right into the room. It's just as important to have an exaust, so use another blower in reverse connected to my light so the heat and old air is evacuated from the top of the room. Two DAYTON 265 CFM SQUIRREL CAGE Blowers should work well in the space you described. A good desk fan that keeps the leaves moving should work fine.....
    :)

A active air system is what will be required to remove and maintain lower temps!Intake/Exhaust.Use Squirrel cage active fans like FTNW suggested.A desk fan would serve you no purpose but to blow hot air around your room.At approx 54 cubic feet of grow room,2 60 cfm's Datytons would suffice to pull the hot and replace with cooler fresh air in a minutes time. You can get a pair for around $120.

umm just noticed my seedlings seem to be slightly tall, they are in second week from germination and are already5/6 inches tall but with only a few leaves on them, they have only been under a normal 60w bulb just to give them some constant light.is this normal and if not how can i prevent it in future?

Heat will stretch plants, that is one of the reasons to maintain 73-78 degree temps.heat also leads to a increase in hermaphroditism and slows growth as well.

    What meangreeen said.
    ---
If the house has enough circulation, a small fan will be sufficent, although not ideal.

If you're growing with what's availible, use your body as a your gauge. If you like the environment, the plants are happy enough.

If you must, sacrifice side reflection for circulation.

I want to start growing, but I need to convice my parents first. I don't wanna grow behind their back because my dad could lose his job and it would be too hard to hide anyways (I'd always be nervous)..

    NAMASTE

I have been going with 600 hps for a few years.Nothing beats them
in use.I run only in line duct fans at or around 392 cfm on my 600hps.With three 600hps and my in line my room temp is a steady 74degrees all the time.
My hoods are cool sun and can be placed 5inches from the top of the growth with out ever any burning from heat. This has for me been a god sent with this method.I have never used Dayton and only fantect but one thing can be said venting your hood is a must.Like meangreen said you will see longation and other problems if you do not remove the heat from the hood .Small oscillating fans work great too but i have found what works the best time in and time out is keeping your hood cool is realy the only way to go.The to types of fans given should be easy to find in most places.Out of the two fans like Dyton run cheaper.

Hey Spoons. Glad you have decided to grow your own. I would take the advice of FTNW. With that light, especially in a cabinet you will need a blower or exhaust. I use to checkout overgrow.com, they have alot of info, but alot jerks on that board. FTNW you and Spoons should check out www.icmag.com . A bunch of people from overgrow.com started this site. It's just like OG but with a more friendly feel like this place. If you guys are ever over on IC say what's up. ( I have the same screen name). Hey KoKo4 you should wait until your out of your parents home. Not only could your dad lose his job, they could also lose their house if you where caught growing. Why not try it outdoors for now? Just my .02. Good luck to you all on your growing hopefully we meet up again.

    Later,
    Tragic

This is not correct. overgrow is full of book knowledge.

Tiedye, meangreen and I have in excess of 60 years of growing experince between us.

That's alot of pragmatic experience in only three people.

and that's not to take away from the other knowledge growers here.

Hey Gecko. Sounds like you could be a great source of knowledge to my hangout www.icmag.com The site is not about book knowledge more about growers experience. One of my buddies over there let me know about this site and I love the friendly atmosphere. We are trying to mantain the same vibe over there. Alot of the other cannabis sites I have checked out are nothing but a bunch of kids and unexperienced growers with shitty attitudes.

Over grow the world with love,
