    Picking a greatest hippie seems as futile as picking a greatest musician, or actor, or milkman. My answer is…..everyone who is/was thought to be or has ever thought they were a hippie.

    I'd say Henry David Thoreau. Just because he was so far-out and independent-thinking for his time, and put a lot of ideas in the heads of Americans that I think may have helped out the hippie thing in the 60s and 70s. My dad always told me that "Thoreau was sort of the first hippie," and I never understood why until reading "Walden."

    i'd say jesus christ is closer, and he was pretty radical too.
