Wow, look at the cast of losers and criminals this Discovery Channel special claims to be the "greatest Americans." We have Barbara Bush, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Laura Bush, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Tom Cruise, John Edwards, Mel Gibson, Rudolph Giuliani, Billy Graham, Michael Jackson, Lyndon B. Johnson, Rush Limbaugh, Madonna, Dr. Phil McGraw, Michael Moore, Richard Nixon, Colin Powell, Ronald Reagan, Condoleezza Rice, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Joseph Smith (Creator of Mormonism), Martha Stewart, Donald Trump, Sam Walton (Creator of Wal-Mart), and Oprah Winfrey. On a more disgusting note, those are just the nominations that astound me the most. Did you notice that they included John Edwards but not John Kerry? I found that kind of interesting. Anyway, that's one terrible and depressing list... You can view the whole list here.
How exactly are they defining "greatest"? lol...definitely wouldn't have been my picks, that's for sure.
maybe they meant the guy that talks with ghosts? we had a greatest canadian a lil while ago. it turned out to be the guy that came up with universal health care. id say thats a pretty good choice. though, there were quite a few athletes and celebrities. i dont see how they could qualify to be the greatest person in a country
I have no idea. Mark Twain was the only novelist, there were no artists on the list as far as I know, and no philosophers. Well, some might call Thomas Jefferson a philosopher... Heh, no, they meant the vice-presidential candidate. Apparently he was named the sexiest politician or something. I agree. There is no reason that someone like Tom Cruise should be in the running to be named the greatest American who has ever lived. () What is perhaps most disturbing is the fact that George W. Bush made it into at least the top 25. So not only is he considered by some to be one of the greatest American politicians of all time, he is also considered to be one of the greatest people who has ever lived. Amazing...
seems heavy on the political side I guess Michael Jackson belongs on there, he is the greatest dad a kid could ever have.
I think Madonna should get it considering she moved to England and shed her Michigan accent for an upper class Londoner Madonna vs Joseph Smith in the finals
Actually,I think Mel Gibson was born in the USA. Arnie wasn't born here though, but I guess anyone with citizenship will do for their list. It doesn't matter though,it's still a creepy list in my opinion. Yes,creepy,it's scary that some of those people are idolized and revered.
To make Tommy Douglas interesting to people who aren't Canadian... he was (is) also the Grandfather of Keifer Sutherland. Medicare or "24"? Which is the greater accomplishment?
Ahahahaa... okay, in their defense, I had to make a list like this for history class, and it got really damn hard after number 46 or so. Dr.Phil is a "Greatest American". Ahahahhahahaaaaaa.... Gloria Steinum should be on there. Fuckers.
the only americans who would apply are the real americans the native americans the rest of you are just immagrants from all over who are living in a stolen country
good idea, lets just keep feeling like we did something wrong when we weren't even alive at the time.
True, but you're one person. If you have a thousands of people working together, it shouldn't be hard to come up with a decent list. There are a lot of people who should be on there but aren't. What do you want me to do, apologize for my sins? However, I do have a problem with the way things are taught in elementary school with regards to the Native Americans. It's pretty sad how kids are taught that the good ol' Pilgrims arrived on Plymouth Rock and made friends with the "Indians." They make it out to be some kind of fairy tale.
We had something similure here in the UK a couple of years ago. Princess Diana, Winston Churchill, and Douglas Bader were among the nominations, and it was decided by a public phone in/internet vote. Churchill won it in the end
I just saw this list... makes my stomach turn, TURN I tell ye... Horrible, Terrible.... But seriously, it may be hard to make a list, but com'n this list is nothing but shit. It sounds like they polled some sixth grade classes...
FUCKING SICK. Making a mockery of the strength, willpower, and self-sacrifice that these American heroes made for a country that would eventually RIDICULE and PERVERT their accomplishments in the spirit of capitalism. How wonderfully ironic.
I hope your being sarcastic. Honestly, what safcrice has Ellen Degeneres, Tom Hanks, Arnold, Brett Farvre, John Edwards, Barrack Obama.... geez just to name a few.... It seriously must have been a list compiled by middle school students.... or something similiar.
