I was listening to George Benson's version of Natures Boy.Only the lyrics are the only resemblance of the the classic Nat King Cole original it is in itself IMO a brilliant track in its own right. What other great cover versions can you think of? The is All along The Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix.
Nobody's Fault But Mine ny Led Zeppelin but I can't remember who they covered it from though. They've covered quite a few older tracks but this one stands out quite alot as well as Joan Baezs' 'Babe I'm Gonna Leave You' and 'In My Time Of Dying' but again I can't remember who originally wrote it.
It's kinda dumb, but I like Sublime's cover of Scralet Begonias. I like the original version better, but Sublime just puts a great twist on the song and it's so funky.
Oasis - My Generation. Originally The Who, obviously. Could just be me, but I love the Oasis version of this song.
the breeders did a pretty cool cover of happiness is a warm gun weezer's cover of velouria is top notch too
Neil Young's cover of Ian Tyson's Four Strong Winds WSP's cover of Peace Frog (thedoors) Pearl Jam's cover of Baba O' Riley (thewho)
Al Green's cover of Light My Fire. David Sanborn and Sting doing Ain't No Sunshine David Sanborn and Oleta Adams version of Nobody Does It Better. Brand New Heavies' version of Midnight At The Oasis. Coldcut's version of Autumn Leaves.
Sublime - Scarlet Begonias(grateful dead) ACP - Imagine(Lennon) I'm sure this one will get a bunch of flames... but i like the cover.... i dont think its better than it... but it is a good cover Velvet Revolver - Money(Pink Floyd) Slash's intro to that song is amazing..... Haha, La Vie En Rose was written by Edith Piaf, but yes, Chet Atkins did help make it a bit more popular, I'm not sure if Merle Travis covered it either. Either way, a really beautiful song. I recorded the cover on a Taylor 712ce that was loaned to me, I believe.
I really liked Type O negatives cover of Summer Breeze. Also, I thought that TooL did a great cover of Kyuss' Demon Cleaner. Of course, many of the ones that were already listed are excellent too.
and if you are a fan of that song you will someday be very well pleased when you watch the DMB video Listener Supported which ends on an apocalyptic version of that song which God himself will probly play when he comes down from the heavens. (we're sposed to be looking for a guy on a white horse coming on the clouds, right?) That song would be the soundtrack for that scenario (if ever!!)
dmb's version is nowhere close to jimi version of all along the watchtower. I heard that dylan, after hearing jimi's cover, said he tried to play watchtower more like the way jimi played it. While i dont think jimis version is as good as the original, i think dylan saying something like that shows how great jimi's version actually was.
Hmm... my favorite cover of All Along The Watchtower was when Bob Dylan was just starting to get popular and was in Greenwich. '63, I believe. Richie Havens' cover... he was in Greenwich at the time, as well.
Black Label Society did a bunch of good cover song purple haze stairway to heaven voodoochild black dog the wizard and i saw a commercial on last night about Kids bop that sang beatles songs. I nearly shot someone.
