goofy family customs...

in our family, it's not a normal fridge unless there's a jar of maraschino cherries in it. we don't actually eat the things, but we always ahve to have a jar of them. we are so stuck on this that if a member of the family looks in your fridge and there's not a jar of maraschina cherries in it, they will gasp, turn around, walk out the door, go to the store and buy a jar to put in your fridge. we've also been known to bring these jars to house-warming parties of friends who know us better. they're honored and amused.

no one knows the origins of this. the old fruit cake that gets passed around every christmas with uncle lynn's old dentures stuck on the side of it is pretty obvious.

 

its not wierd but,

fireworks are a must in my family.

 

oh yeah. and no matter what time of night you arrive, you will be fed your first time there. i forgot to warn dave, and next thing he knows, my mother is fixing him a chef's salad at 2 AM. also, if you're new, do not be alarmed when someone is forcing waffles down your throat before you head off for breakfast. we will stand around and stare at you until you're finished eating. then my dad will complain when you don't eat the breakfast he bought.


also, if you're sitting in your room, or any other room, do not be frightened when someone silently appears, stares at you, then walks out without saying a word. we just do that.

 

when i was little we didnt have a lot of money so we wold make it a big deal to go out for fast food every friday night. i thought it was great.

and now every christmas eve we get dressed up in cocktail dresses and eat finger foods and drink wine, then we open one present each!!​

usually when we are on a road trip if we drive by a super wal mart we all scream, we do this under bridges, when we cross state lines and while we are in tunnels too......​

 

I think every family should have their own annual holiday. Something other than christmas or other holidays that can be stressful because you gotta make all the holiday rounds and all the other expected shit.

You know, something a little more personal than a vacation or something.

Nevermind, I'm cheesy.

We keep it pretty simple in my family - if you don't drink, you're out.

my family had an easter egg hunt once

 

hahaha i think my grandma secretly has the maraschino cherry tradition too... her fridge ALWAYS has a FULL jar and noone eats them. she thinks they are too spicy so im like.. why do you buy them? anyway, since i have only been married 2 years and living on different continent than my family... my husband is my family now .. we havent had time to make many traditions.. except that in every city we ever visit we search out the irish pub and stop in.for every special event that occurs my husband who is typically a non smoker has a cheap cigar haha.my cousins and my sister and i upon seeing each other after not having seen each other for awhile do a game that my uncle learned in college.. we make fists.. .straighten our arms out very stiff to our sides.. and flap them against our thighs very hard while bouncing around each other like boxers do.... and then bounce in closer, and straighten our arms out in front of us and clap out stiffened arms and fists against the others arms or chest.. (not on the breast though . it kinda hurts in the first place) i call it chicken boxing. lol its great. oh and when my baby cousin gets upset we sing her the song that we made up for my cousins cat (the cat died , but the baby loves the song) ...the cats name was bean so we sing in three part harmony,," bean beany bop bean beany bop bean beany bopper whoooooah" over and over again. its a cute melody too. but i think im going more into how weird my family is than the actual traditions hahaha.

 

how fun. we also tell every child we get before they go off to kindergarten that their heart is in their belly button.

 

my dad will be watching tv and suddenly start giggling and say "hey hand me a peice of paper and pen" so i do and of course as always, he will start drawing ridiculous little monster people caracitures and lauging histerically at his own drawings. he does it about anyone he sees who has a personality he thinks is funny, with the family and with people with funny features. the funniest thing about it is that he cant draw for crap.. they look nothing like people they are basically big eyes, noses , and feet with big toes but somehow he makes them look like the people he means them to look like

 

my dad loves giving gag gifts at christmas like wrapping up a block of wood or a can of soup. hahaha once he got me a box of paper clips

 

sometimes when my whole family is at my grandmas we will get in singing moods and all go out on the porch at midnight and sing church songs (since my family is religious and those are the only songs everyone knows... haha we will have 4 or 5 parts harmony sometimes and sometimes even start singing really stupid songs like the song that never ends, adding harmony and my dad will pretend to do a bass percussion vocal.. its REALLY weird. but its cool too.

 

do i sound like i miss my family yet ? hahaha i havent seen them since october and then only for a week.. AWWWWWWWWWWWW (sniff)

 

for me, like the old saying goes, i miss my family, but my aim is getting better. nah, they're okay now, but it is a bit like the twilight zone entering my families house. it's just bizarre. but it's fun taking dave there, because he'd always thought he was so crazy. i'd just call him exuberant. my mother is crazy. people FREAK OUT over my family and never come back. now when we go visit, dave insists that we get a hotel.

 

My family NEVER throws away pillows. Seriously, it's disgusting--we have pillows that are 80 years old and yellowed. We put cases on them of course, but if a guest ever took off the case I'd die of embarassment.

 

my MOM has one of those. she's got some sad nasty down pillow she got when she was 13! she's in her 50's now. it's nasty.

 

my brother james, the model formerly known as JB (i guess that name wasn't classy enough for him), has a wierd thing about sticking his pinky finger into ears. any ears, including animal ears.

hmm, my memory ain't so great... it's been awhile since my immediate family has all been under one roof. this is terrible. i really can't remember any goofy family customs... that could be because i'm getting close to starting a family of my own... hey, now i can start some new goofy customs
