strawberries. there are other things, but strawberries taste the best. I once had a slight case of hight-sickness, which is a surrounding caused form of anemia, and I treated it with strawberries....hmmmmmmmm, most yummie medicine....
bran flakes whole wheat breads oatmeal brown rice black beans garbanzo beans lentils navy beans pinto beans soy beans tempeh tofu peanuts almonds sunflower seeds dried apricots cantaloupe prunes raisins watermelon bok choy broccoli brussel sprouts collard greens kale kelp mustard greens swiss chard turnip greens blackstrap molasses i copied all of those from "being vegetarian for dummies" a lot of fake/mock meats are high in iron too because they are made up of the stuff listed above
Beets are also really high in iron. Buy or grow some beets, and then make a veggie borscht using some of the other veggies and lots of beans. Takes about an hour to make, but it freezes in the freezer for over 6 months. Freeze it in small, serving sized containers, and it's thaw and serve. (there is a borscht recipe in the soup section)
Also, try cooking more of your meals in a cast iron pan, especially acidic foods like marinara sauce. If you eat an iron fortified breakfast cereal, you will get better absorption if you drink a glass of OJ with your meal. What makes you think you aren't getting enough iron?
Actually I do take a multi vitamin with iron (i try to remember to take it anyway), and I'm not *positive* im lacking, but I'm still not totally up on all the good sources, and I'd prefer to get most of my iron from food instead of a vit. I also get chronic migranes and I was thinking part of it might have to do with something lacking in me nutrition wise~ thanks everyone
A product called Flouradex. (hope thats the right way to spell it??) I don't know if its available o/s but I buy it from coles supermaket in the health food section here in australia for about $20. It's a liquid iron supplement and I take it when I feel like I need it. And when the bottle is finished (in about 2 weeks if sharing) you don't need to take it until you feel you need to again. Which for me is usually every few months or so if that... so I find it to be a great alternative to popping iron pills etc every day. Flouradex rocks!!! Peace! August!
this is the list they give you of iron rich foods when you give blood, and the lady there told me the best for women is usually rasins: also it says: ~DandelionPrincess (not Pablo)
