freetowski thats one bad ass picture dude. Pearl Jam kicks serious ass. But yea, female jazz...Ella. Every vocalist since has been influenced, girl or guy, and many instrumentalists as well. Diana Krall, yea shes good, but it sounds like shes trying to hard to me if you know what I mean. I like Ernestine Anderson cause well shes soulful. There is this guitar player named Mimi Fox you should check out. And of course, teri lynn carrington on drumset. Shes a bad mofo. I think theres a Ken Burns video called women in jazz. It might be of interest to you.
Actually if you're talking about female jazz artists currently living and recording music sandy sasso is great i am a singer my self and have seen her live a few times and she is friends with a good friend of mine. www.sandysasso.com
For my first post, I'd like to make mention here of Lizz Wright. She's fairly new to the music scene, signed to the Verve label, and has one of the best voices I've heard from a female singer in a long time. Her first album is called Salt, and it was released in like 2003 or something. Azure
Billie Holiday, hands down......there are so many songs of hers i'd love to cover, but trying to amass the twenty piece backing band can be a bitch, lol!
Flora is amazing, played with chick corea in Return to Forever's first 2 albums. divine voice. esperanza is a new gal that is a fantastic bass player and composer and vocalist, well worth checking out
There's quite a lot of great female jazz singers out there, but my favorite would have to be Billie Holiday. Her voice gives me chills...
Have to say,Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughn. Not sure if you can say Nina Simone,as she was pretty unclassifiable, but shes very good."Mississippi Goddam".
Hi everyone, My favourites are Stacey Kent, Norah Jones, Molly Johnson and Melody Gardot. If you like these you might like my new album Sarah Brickel 'Music Box'. Enjoy listening:daisy:

If you like more popular stuff, some of the Amy Winehouse stuff has a bit of that sound... she did a cover of Valerie from the Zuton's that I liked a lot. Other people you mightn't have heard, that I like a lot... I'm kind of music-geeky (among other things that I get geeky about LOL)... Mia Borders Alexis and the Samurai Laura Mvula Rachael Price Theresa Andersson There's a bunch of artists, male and female. Go to NO Jazz Fest one year, you'll be hooked.
