i'm thinking about dread locking my hair, but i'm worried about if i eventually go bald and what it will look like then, i suppose i could just deal with it then

i have this image of dreads being held in by just a few strands and it's really gross

also, does that knottyboy.com emergency removal kit really work? i don't want them to be too thick or get too thick in time, so if some come out too thick could i use that to separate them and make them smaller

i say go for the dreads! ;)
if you are worried about going bald BECAUSE you dreaded your hair (ie. the hairs all break off the the roots and the dreads are held by a couple of lone hairs) i would just suggest that you not mess with them too much after you've dreaded. i know that constant palm rolling and leaving elastics at the roots (if you're doing the back combing method) can all break off hairs close to the roots. a good thread to consult here is one of the stickys at the top of the knottylocks forum: Sticky: Dread Care And Maintenance Q&A (BASICS ANSWERED HERE!)

there is another forum that you might want to check out for issues such as this its http://knottylocks.tk/
they've got a dreadlocks 911 section that a lot of people find very helpful. a couple of other good resources are our very own Fleassy and electricbuddah! they're very knowledgable and i don't think that they mind answering a couple of questions if you don't find the info you're looking for here or elsewhere.
anyway, i wish you luck in what ever you deceide and remember to post pics if you do dread :D

thank you for your reply knitin.chick, i'll check out your links

and knottyinthemaritimes, i'm not going bald yet, and as far as genetics go i should be ined up for a great head of hair throughout my entire life. and i'm not worried about going bald because of dread locking, but just going bald naturally later on in life after it's been done. it's just a lingering fear i have, because i over analyze. and that image of some dreads being held in by just a few strands or like if they broke off and there was like a single bald dread spot it just seems really gross

I am going to go out on a limb and say he (I am also assuming this) is worried about male pattern baldness. Planning for the future and all that good stuff. Unfortunitly I have no sound advice.

yes, and also what if 1 of the dreads i don't like because it's too thick and i want to divide it into 2, is it always possible to comb out your dreads with conditioner and stuff, or is there a time when they get too thick and knotted to where you're definitely stuck with them at the size they are
    aside from cutting of course

you can comb your dreads out with conditioner if they are still fairly fresh or your could rip the one that is two large in two but remember that the different sizes are all part of the beauty of dreads and they will shrink and fatten in time. :D

You will learn to love the form your dreads take what ever form it is. if you are someone who is greatly worried about aesthetics i would strongly advise AGAINST dreadlocks as the process is very organic and as with most organic things incredibly unpredictable.

balding with dreads dont worry. you can allways shave them off. OR just let yourslef bald, ive seen a few old guys with bald top heads and a row of dreads around the side, looked fine.

if you truely want dreads go for it. i dont think you should go into it with the thought of "if i dont like them i an wash them out" ... because ... they arent really just some hair style. they are a commitment and you will go therough many days when you look in the mirror and think "yuck!!"
