Facebook has flooded me with a small army of articles to read about this headline. I chose this one, because the blurb is a head-turner:

Stephen Hawking Confesses God Particle Can Destroy Universe, Astrophysicists To Blame

As far as I can tell, it seems he's saying both things: it can happen but it likely won't happen because "it would take a collider larger than our planet to reach dangerous energy levels."

How do you torture a particle?

I don't know but they use the word torture in this Higgs documentary

    http://youtu.be/26FRAk8I2hs

I'm trying to find where I heard it. When I do I'll let you know. Seems like it's an inside joke.

Found it. 16:48 .. Frank Wilczek dumps out a puzzle and says it looks like an instrument of torture. Seems fitting, scientists do torture the fuck out of life. Barbarians.

Hawking is famous more from the cult of personality than substance, what he was most famous for he ended up being wrong about

    Good grief!

I think Hawking was right the first time and when scientists get their heads out of their dumb holographic asses they will some day also realize he was right. That unitarity determinism relies of the false assumption that the fabric of space-time is absolutely perfect. Which is ridiculous really, information gets destroyed, get over it.

Information gets destroyed .. .or FORM (material) gets destroyed?

The article does not ring entirely true to me. I am sure there is some truth to both sides, but I doubt either side is that radical.
I say they should stop the particle tunnel experiment before the particle goes haywire and goes back and forth violently to get the distance needed and explode the whole damn thing apart. :yikes:

also to those bad mouthing scientists. I suggest you stop using any of their advancements, too, like penicillan, etc when you are sick. Just pray that it gets better.....

The article is mostly satire .. funniest thing about it is how most people don't realize that it is until afterwards lol

but the satirical article is based on the very real recent news of Hawking's utterings of danger and doom. I was a bit annoyed .. why cast a warning if the warning is so unrealistic ("it would take a collider larger than our planet to reach dangerous energy levels."). Well, there is no collider larger than our planet. So why encroach on the senses of people with sensational garbage? Heh, thus the call for satire then. haha

"you would have to smoke fifteen hundred pounds in fifteen minutes"

"AHA so you admit pot overdoses are LETHAL!"

Yeah, some things just don't need caveats, in polite conversation....

My favorite part of the article isn't even the comments section *snort*

    It's the last paragraph

I can't stop giggling at it.

what happens when a powerful particle accelerator is built that can create a new "big bang" if that was possible, could one resist the temptation to perform this experiment?

My guess ( based on nothing but the influence of pot ) is that for the universe to be here at all, it must have always been around in some way or other, so if there were a way for a species such as us to destroy the universe forever, it probably would have happened by now. That said, if there were one species throughout eternity to finally find a way, it would probably be us.

i watched a some 3 hour youtube video about quantum mechanics, the symmetries involved and such it was quite interesting. it really can only be explained mathematically, at least in such a way that makes sense. it went through the whole thing of how fiddling with the equations in certain ways explains the heisenberg uncertainty principle, and how there can be multiple dimensions of time

a particle moving forward in time is the same thing is it's antiparticle moving backward through time. many effects can be explained by the symmetries involving many aspects.

something coming into existance might not seem much different than the same thing going out of existence and vice versa.

    http://youtu.be/V7bbYNCdqak

it is a very long video, but very interested and if anyone is interested in such a thing. it goes quite fast as well, so i had to pause certain parts so i could try to understand what was being explained.

Very simple, you give it to the CIA and they waterboard it. I've heard that they have had lots of opportunities to practice waterboarding and are amazingly good at it, and can make even the toughest terrorist sing like a little bird. Just remember that post 9/11, if they suspect that anyone is a terrorist, and that includes tiny little particles, they can be held in prison indefinitely. And if you are a foreign "terrorist" (specially a middle eastern person or little particle) you can be tortured as well. All in the name of justice and homeland security. Rumors have it that the little particle has been linked to Obama Bin Laden... I mean OSAMA!. But I don't buy it. I suspect that what they really have in their custody is a middle eastern turban wearing jihadist little particle that has been link to Al-Qaeda or ISIS. Dangerous little guy! May long live the drag queen, I mean Bush! - bush favored waterboarding "terrorists."

    Seriously, I have no idea!

you cannot confine a particle because of the heisenberg uncertainty princple.

What about particles trapped within confined spaces?
