I am looking into starting a commune and am heavily leaning towards the goat(kinder goat) side, was wondering if anyone has some advice, or comments to make on this subject. Does anyone have care advice or requirement information that I should know before getting myself some goats, or should i get some cattle instead.
I would rather have goats, myself. In my experience, they just take less work. Especially the babies. Calves seem to get sick so easily.
http://fiascofarm.com/goats/milk-goatvscow.htm - pro goat http://www.caprine.co.nz/wa.asp?idWebPage=6658&idDetails=116 - also pro goat CAKE said "Sheep go to heaven, Goats go to hell". though, if that carries any weight!
i adore goats. they have so much personality and charm, and from watching my neighbors caring for their, they're far lower maintenance.
cows are to strong, goats are easier to control, and you can take goats for walkies and they jump in the air, cows just moooo
sorry if i sound a little childish but....goats are just so darn cute! no really, i'm kind of partial to goats because i was raised on goat milk and cheese....from my experience, they are very friendly animals, not incredibly smelly, a lot less poop to shovel (smaller animals and all), plus, they'll cut your grass for you (jk. he he he).
depends on what you really need out of your critters,,,, have run a dairy farm,,, have run a goat farm,,,, have lived on farms all my life,,,, pros cow,,, more milk,,, more cheeses etc,,,less health trouble overall n vets know more bout them,,,lotsa meat from one animal pros goat,,, smaller, easier handling, cleaner animal overall, less milk but good market for it ,,,, cons goats,,,, males stink terrible,,, vets know very little about them,,, coyotes and other predators can get to them easier,, cons cows,,,, large animal more danger to handlers, shit alot n make giant messes ,,, ruin fencing more easily,,, eat alottttttttttt more and therefore cost more,, basically it is your choice in the end,,, on what type of space, fencing etc that you have,,,, both are great critters and both are great assets in there own way it just depends on what is right for what you need,,,, also beef prices on the hoof are astronomical for even a calf,,,, where the goats are running bout 40 bux for a kid..... as i said,,, i have done both and currently,,, (well til two days ago) had both here on the farm,,,, iffin you have more questions etc,,, feed costs per animal etc, and space per animal etc,,, i can go into more detail ,, right down to common illnesses and vaccines etc health care if you need,,, just holler luv n lite
Goats, for sure!!!!!!!!!!! and you could make goat cheese, it is so good, goat are actually very pleasant animals, when i was 8 or 9, i got a baby goat & i was feeding her with milk in a bottle.... she was my little baby, i adored her, so cute and loving!
I would prefer goats to cattle anyday. Goats are lot smarter then cows. I love billy goats they come in all sorts of neat colors and have the biggest personality!! They also love to guard things, like large mounds of dirt.. I have seen some goats stand on top of Dirt mounds and guard it from the other goats and livestalk hehe. they're so friggen cute.
