Life is easier if you do not set "goals"... i think it stresses you out more than its worth.. and personally i've gotten a lot more out of life not having goals

i only think that life is harder with goals when your goals are too specific or too far out of reach.

i mean - if you wanna touch the moon and you are actively pursuing a career with NASA or some other country's space program, that's awesome

but if you want to be a millionaire and you are scratchin tickets, you've got a ways to go

well there is a difference between realistic and unrealistic goals...

the ticket scratching thing would be like hoping to marry a hot model type while searching for girls on CraigsList

actually.. lemme take back what i said earlier.. here's really what i meant.. goals are alright as long as you don't restrict yourself to time with them.. i think goals come easier and more realistic if you don't set a time to things.. there is plenty of time.. especially when you are 18 to do what you want to do and be what you wanna be.. dont restrict yourself with something as petty as time

my goal in life used to be to just have a happy life. then it changed to getting a degree. i dunno anymore though. i was staying at someone's place not too long ago that had this awesome family. he didn't make a whole lot, but everything he needed was there. he was able to support his sons, wife, and even his brother and sister. not having a degree at this point in my life while the majority of my friends do kinda sucks. so i guess i hope to have the resolve to get a degree one of these days. but i guess i've sorta realized recently that it's not immensely important. as long as you lead a happy life. my next step is really gonna be starting to take my mental health seriously (being honest with my shrink, finding one i can trust, and actually taking my meds). then maybe consider getting on some adhd meds. and if that doesn't work, consider going to one of those life rehabilitation bubble places.

and purp, you can probably take an aptitude test once you start college. i know that the majority of people don't know what their major is gonna be till second year. and once you're enrolled, you can talk to your counselor and talk about taking an aptitude test. it'll show you based on what you consider your strengths and interests, where you might wanna go.

Right now I'm pretty set on getting a BS in chemistry, then grad school, and from there pharmaceuticals, energy, or wherever I can find work. I also intend to keep taking english classes because I'd like to write.

Aptitude test sounds like a good idea. I may look into that.

I'm going to school for Spanish.. About a year and a half to go (hopefully).
After that I'm going to join the Peace Corps and then get my ESL certificate and teach english overseas

I do think I need to speak with a counselor to get everything straight.

In your situation, I'd say that your ultimate goal in life is to be happy - obvious, that should be everyone's. But that is where your priorities need to come in. Degrees come with huge debt - if you can live without a lot of things it might be great to get a degree, or if your field of choice makes a lot of money, it'd be easy to pay off that loan. And is the field fun for you? Obviously if you aren't happy with what you are doing to pay for your dream degree, you aren't satisfying your goal completely.

I would love to get a degree in fine art - the problem for me is that really don't want to live with debt and typically artists dont make a shitload of money. I start to think - I enjoy sciences, chemistry has always interested me and I have always been good at it, but this would also take away time from my love of art, I feel.

Right now, I feel like I have to shed a lot of my interests. I enjoy a lot of things and I feel like I have the groundwork and basic skill in all these interests - it's just a matter of choosing which what I want to pursue and where aptitude tests typically don't go over very well with me.

I've heard of people with minimal Chinese speaking ability going to China to literally just talk in advanced english courses at universities and getting paid pretty well...

i guess it really depends on why you're going to school. if you're going to school to learn and be educated and don't give two shits what kind of job you're gonna end up with, study whatever you want. but if what you're looking for is a good job in the end, you might wanna start thinking about what you're good at (not necessarily interested in) and what might land you a good job. i know too many people that are working at barnes 'n noble with 4 year degrees.

major in chemistry and get a minor in fine arts? i don't really know for sure if even chemistry has a lot of jobs with just a bachelors. especially with the way the economy is today. i know, though, that the health care field hasn't been hit too hard. i think biology and chemistry degrees can be useful there. ya can't really cut back on being sick. you know?

and yeah, i've definitely put some thought into how happiness should be a part of what i'm getting into rather than just solely what'll bring me a fat check.

i actually took one of those aptitude tests not too long ago and it said i should be a geriatric social worker. which definitely sounds perfect for me. i know i'm smart enough for a higher paying field. but i also think that going for just money might prove to give me a pretty shitty life in the long run. so i dunno. right now, i'm not sure.

a lot of has to do with balancing what you want (material wise) with how much you are going to make at your job...if you value materials enough, maybe you'll rough through a shitty job or a job that doesnt interest you

you said you just want to be happy, and you think you might enjoy doing social work - maybe your work is what brings you happiness.

just know that social workers seriously get the biggest shaft ever when it comes to wages - you'll hardly be better off (financially) than the people you serve

studio work and freelance editorial for magazines seems to be my favorite. me and my real good friend at school always joke about opening our own photo studio...maybe we'll actually be serious about it haha

my cousin stays in a photo studio in new york. it's really weird. it's a 3 room studio apartment style

the kitchen and photostudio is one room, theres a bathroom then two bedrooms. there is a HUGE green screen and a big white panel for photoshoots.

a lot of Suicide Girl shoots are taken there. when i stayed there for a week there were naked french models - i missed em cause i was passed out :( :( :(

the landlord also rents out jibs...so the studio is often times fiiiilllllled with these things - it's a very strange scenario but she gets a good deal on rent, i suppose and she is hardly ever there cause she does studio production and is a waitress.

Maybe try taking graphic design and stuff like that. You really don't need to know your major right away, you'll find out there are plenty of people who are undecided majors. You could also major in liberal arts. Its a sort of general major, and would apply to many different professions.

Personally I'm a psychology major. However, I haven't decided what I specifically want to do. You have to consider what will get a job. It would probably be easier to find a job as a clinical psychologist, but I'm pretty interested in evolutionary psychology.
