Read it a million times before. And actually have talked about it quit a few times on here. Most people say that the whole book was made up just to scare teens away from doing drugs........
me on the other hand, I read it for the first time when i was 14 years old and wanted to try every drug in the world after that! :) LOL
But ya, still a good read.

it wasnt. heres the link the the proof it was made up http://www.snopes.com/language/literary/askalice.asp
proves that it was false and Beatrice Sparks actually wrote it and she wrote like 6 other books just like Go Ask Alice. just a tool used to get kids to see the "evils of drugs"

Ya know I read the book Go Ask Alice, happen to have the book still because we had to buy it for school. I really thought the book was one of experience. It actually made me write down some of the things that were happening to me. I went on to write a computer "diary" for one of my high school projects right after I read the book. A few times I changed the names around LOL. Just my thoughts at the good ole age of 16. I remember this one time when I was so bombed that I fell asleep while writing right on the keyboard at school. I ended up keeping the jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj that was at the end of the page where I fell asleep to end the entry. It was funny as hell. I printed it out a few months later and made in into one of my reports for school. Just took all the names and changed them when I used it. You know so I didnt get myself into trouble. I look back on it now and it brings back a lot of memories. Still have the report. Not sure why I saved it but I am glad I did.
I really dont care if the book was written by a real person or not. Whether it was made up or whateva. I know it helped me to question the crazy stuff I was doing. Didnt necessarily stop me from all of the stupid stuff I did but it helped me to think about the consequences. Who knows.
Over all though I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone who has had or is just starting to experience drugs. It really makes a person think. IDK You have to read it for yourself. Def. recommend it though.

Man, I read this book after a friend lent it to me, and I can relate to it so much. It really didn't scare me much, and it made me want to drop out of society so much more. I really have a lot in common with her, and although it is a propaganda tool, it had the opposite effect on me...

i remember reading it and thinking "this doesn't sound like something a 16 year old girl would write." i don't know if it's fake or not, but i do know that it didn't turn me off drugs. it actually turned me on, especially to LSD after reading the description of her first experience.

The rain is like God's tears falling down like my hair, etc... I read it about three times, and yeah, desired dope after that. That's what proselytizing gets ya. Preachy people create the very scenario they react against. Read Jay's Journal. It sucked! Go Ask Alice was her masterpiece. There was also 'Ritchie' about the teen on barbs. That was a good one. And, 'Tuned Out.'

GO ASK ALICE is not really a biography, in its truest sense. If it was a true, 100% transcribed (word for word) diary, it might be considered a mini-biography, but as it's introduction states: "GO ASK ALICE is based on the actual diary of a fifteen-year-old drug user." (The Editors) It implies that GO ASK ALICE is only BASED on an actually diary, is IS NOT a 100% transcribed (word for word) actual diary!!!

"In an October 1979 interview with Aileen Pace Nilsen for School Library Journal, Sparks claimed that GO ASK ALICE had been based on the diary of one of her patients, but that she has added various fictional incidents based on her experiences working with other troubled teens. She said that the real 'Alice' had not died of a drug overdose, but in a way that could have been an accident or suicide."

QUOTED FROM: "GO ASK ALICE -Wikipeda, the free encyclopedia"
    LINK: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_Ask_Alice

According to the U.S. COPYRIGHT OFFICE, the AUTHOR of GO ASK ALICE is known!

"Searches at the U.S. Copyright Office [1] (http://www.copyright.gov/records/cohm.html) show that Sparks is the sole copyright holder to GO ASK ALICE. Further, she is listed on the copyright record as the book's author --- not as the editor, compiler, or executor, which would be more usual for someone publishing the diary of a deceased person."

    Also consider:

"...Mark Oppenheimer identified Linda Glovach, an author of young-adult novels,as 'one of the "preparers" of GO ASK ALICE,' although he did not give his source for this claim. Amazon.com's listing for Glovach's novel "Beauty Queen" also states that Glovach is "a co-author" of "Alice." (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/006205161X)."

QUOTED FROM:"GO ASK ALICE - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia"

BEATRICE SPARKS is a MORMON youth (drug abuse) counselor/social worker, who lives in UTAH. She claims that "Alice" was one of her patients (who kept a diary). So, if there is a real "Alice", of GO ASK ALICE, then she probably lived and died in UTAH! On another forums, I read of a teenaged girl who was obsessed with finding the real "Alice". I replied by telling her to search in UTAH.

If "Alice" were alive today, she'd be a minimum of 52 years old, like my age, but she may be a few years older than this, because the years of the diary being written are not given, but the copyright date of 1971 is given. However, it may have taken a year, or two, to get GO ASK ALICE written and published. Alice's last September 20th birthday (as given in GO ASK ALICE) makes her 16 years old, as her September 20th entry (one year earlier) states: "It's my birthday. I'm 15. Nothing". In 1970, I was 16 years old.

In the early 70's, I first read GO ASK ALICE. It may have been after I smoked alot of pot and took an intense 4-way WINDOWPANE LSD trip, or possibly just before this. Either way, I think that GO ASK ALICE probably helped most teens to become TOO CURIOUS about drugs, and want to "experiment" with them. Teenagers are rebellious, anyway, so if they read about a book to tell them to stay away from drugs, guess what they'll do? I wonder.

I cannot say for sure, if there was a real "Alice", but I believe there was. Since I grew up about the exact same time as "Alice", I knew too many girls, who were GO ASK ALICE "Alices", however, there weren't depressing. They were more "hip", full of life and fun!!! In college, I did meet a real hippy chic named "Alice". She was into pot and "reds" (SECONAL-secobarbital/sleeping pills).

I've read GO ASK ALICE many times, since the early 70's, because I can relate TOO MUCH to that book. Even if it's a blend of NON-FICTION and FICTION, the descriptions and events are extremely accurate, especially that cool LSD trip!!! Take it from someone who's actually lived during "Alice's" time period and has had similar experiences, but mostly more positive.

Yesterday (July,26,2006/WED) I just replied to the "GO ASK ALICE" thread, under the DRUG BOOKS section. To read my lengther analysis of GO ASK ALICE, go to:

    http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=175018&page=2

GO ASK ALICE has been very popular since 1971 and has sold millions of copies, so it is still a good read! Also check out the Movie version of GO ASK ALICE, available from: www.moviesunlimited.com. There is a VHS, and a DVD version. It differs slightly from the book, as expected.

"GO ASK ALICE when she's ten feet tall." -GRACE SLICK (of the: JEFFERSON AIRPLANE and GREAT SOCIETY acid/rock/blues music groups)

    Peace and Trip Out

It was really interesting to find out that the book wasnt actually from an unknown female like it is portrayed to be. I have never heard that before honestly.
It was a good book, its a book that deffinetly goes good for a pre-teen read. The whole idea behind a girl just dying after all of that is a great story line but it was honestly a little poorly written. It is a good book. You should check out White Oleander by Janet Finch. That is a good book about a young girls life destruction. Longer book but you wont be able to put it down ;)

I read it in my "year of darkness," a.k.a. eighth grade.
    It's alright.
I think it's a bit overrated, but it's alright. I could read it again if I had to.
