I have the same reaction; shortness of breath, heartburn, coughing, from eating the gluten-free products as from just eating bread. :(

    Maybe it's not the gluten?

That sounds more like a food allergy than an intolerance to gluten. If I were in your position, I would see my GP and ask about a referral for an allergy test.

You could also compare the labels of all of the products that you are reacting too, and try to isolate ingredients common to all of them. Then try avoiding those ingredients for a few weeks and see if it helps at all.

Most pre-made, gluten-free products you buy at the store are loaded with nasty stuff. Try simply eating things that are naturally gluten-free and see how you do.

But like Eggsprog suggests, it sounds like you're allergic to something, and perhaps it's something other than the gluten that is giving you problems.

Give me a run-down of everything you eat in a day, and maybe I can offer some suggestions. You could be consuming gluten from other sources you don't know contain gluten.

Yeah, most store-bought gluten free stuff, aside from tasting pretty nasty, is pretty bad for you. They fill it up with trans-fat, sugar, and/or salt in an attempt to make it palatable.

Pretty much have nothing to add after reading what eggsprog and pr said. I was gonna mention the same two things-could be an allergy to something else. Cut out foods that often cause allergies (dairy, soy, etc.) one by one and see if cutting out one of them makes you feel better.

Also don't go for gimmicy gluten-free stuff. Just buy whole foods that don't have gluten in them. (very easy.)

My stomach problems have gotten so bad that I've basically been living on peanut butter, bananas, almond milk, lettuce and poultry. I bought some soy yogurt but I'm afraid to eat it. Last time I had a hot dog I threw up. I put mayonnaise and margarine on the gluten-free bread. Maybe I'm allergic to mayonnaise or margarine?

Peanuts? Um, just an idea but you may wanna consider whether it's some severe form of candida or.... (not to sound gross!) but a stomach bug-literally, like a parasite or worm of some sort. If you're getting sick, sick.

Well, I've always eaten peanuts. They've never seemed to bother me. I hadn't thought about it.

There's allergies (like, life threatening peanut allergies) and then there's intolerances that aren't nearly as extreme. Not saying it is that, just a thought...

I'm guessing that you've already seen a doctor about this. I'm not sure there is much that they can do other than make some dietary suggestions, but I could be wrong.

Acupuncture/chinese herbal medicine might be helpful to you. This can be expensive though. Acupuncture schools sometimes have low cost student clinics. A chinatown may have some quality affordable practitioners, though often their english is not too good.

Other providers can be good too, but all too often they charge way too much for services.

One way or another, I hope that things can get better soon! :)

The pharmacy might have some fiber supplements you could take. I take a metamucil because my guts are weird, always rumble and melt all down to fluids and I take this powder you mix with water and it..well I'm not actually sure what it does but it gets really thick and lubricates your insides.
Also try some pro biotics for your stomach and digestion.

From the New England School of Acupuncture Clinic:
So acupuncture is used to treat a lot of different conditions. Chinese herbal medicine is also used to treat a lot of conditions, and is often a cheaper and more effective method of treating a disease.

No guarantee that herbs/acupuncture would cure you, but it would certainly be worth looking into, imho, especially if conventional medicine can't do anything for you.

I don't buy that. As many people accurately pointed out in the comments section, the study did not allow nearly enough time to make the determination as to whether or not eliminating gluten leads to an improvement in symptoms. Most people who eliminate gluten from their diet don't notice an immediate improvement, but one that occurs over weeks and even months. One thing I do know is that several people I have talked to have stated that after eliminating gluten from their diets, their problems slowly cleared up. I am not talking just digestive problems, but mental ones as well, since gluten is being increasingly linked with certain mental illnesses -- one being schizophrenia.

Whether you're allergic to margarine or not, stop eating it. It's one of the worst things a person can eat. Some are probably worse than others, but I would avoid them like the plague.
