Scientists Breed “Glow in the Dark” Pigs

Researchers and butchers see endless possibilities

    Thursday, January 12, 2006 11:36

BBC News reports that Taiwanese scientists have bred three green pigs that also glow in the dark. The transgenic pigs were created by mixing pig embryos with genetic material from jellyfish. Other geneticists have bred fluorescent pigs, but these pigs are the first to be green both inside and out. Apparently, the pigs have green insides, including green hearts and other organs. In daylight, the pigs have a slight greenish hue, including their eyes and teeth. However, shine a blue light on these guys, and they glow bright fluorescent green.

The research team responsible says it foresees these green glowing specimens helping in the study of human disease through stem cell research. The pigs’ green stem cells will be easily traceable when transplanted into other animals. We here at SPACE also see an opportunity for the marketing of novelty holiday ham.

It's just plain cruel. It's playing with nature.

how is it cruel? They played with the genetics before the pigs were even born, before they had nerve endings to feel pain

it's actually an attempt to reduce the cruelty involved when dealing with stem cells, because the pigs are so unique their stem cells can be more easily traced when doing stem cell research, rather than using really invasive techniques like biopsies to see what's going on with the cells, how the spread, etc.

I don't believe in animal testing of ANY kind.

Whether the pigs are harmed or not, the scientists keep them in cramped cages, and are forever prodding them with needles. They are treated poorly and it shouldn't be allowed to happen.

A very large number of diabetics would die without Insulin, which has animal byproducts in it, and was developed using animal research.

That's just an example, I can list 50 other diseases which have been cured thanks to animal research.

I would strangle every piggy on earth with my bare hands to save a stranger with diabetes' life.

Even so, that doesnt mean I hate people with diabetes! That was a huge assumption. Im not denying that animal testing has helped the development of medicine, however the treatment that animals are put through to create these medicines are digraceful.

    such as?

    veganism? that's a good start...

    still use makeup?
still use medication other than tree bark/herbs?
    still drink milk?
    ever eat cookies?

or do you raise your own animals on an organic, free range farm?

I mean, I know you have your heart in a good place, but you can't just rant about how evil something is and condemn the actions of others without trying to do something to change that, something other than wishful thinkin

Veganism? - Will be, when I'm older, parents will not allow it.

Still use makeup? -Never have. I don't wear the stuff.... if I did it would be the kind that hasn't been tested on animals.

Still use medication? - If I can avoid medication that has been tested on animals or contains animal product then I will avoid. If not? Well, I will make that decision when/if the time should come. There are many more medication that hasnt been tested on animals than has (I beleive - You may check me on that!)

Drink milk? I believe that comes under veganism.

Eat cookies - huh? vegan ones in the future.... containing soya milk then I guess hrrrm yes.

Raise your own animals on an organic, free range farm? - Erm no, if I become vegan then surely I will not sell the products animals make, nor eat them myself. Looking after animals seems okay... but I doubt it will happen... haha.

and to be honest I wasn't really ranting, I was just stating my opinion, there's a difference.
