I can't stand their new cd, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, or whatever it is, but I actually downloaded it.. :(

    Pure pop-sellout crap.

But I've read on this forum and the Oasis forum that their old stuff is actually good... any suggestions?

I used to love their old stuff...to be fair, it is good, its just one of those things where bono's voice gets to me now.

First album Boy is good, October, War isn't bad.

Some of their early songs are really good....especially the innovative guitar playing

Something about u2 and REM, they seemed to have followed a similar path...early stuff good, later stuff sucky

I could never get into U2. I dont know why. The only songs i can bear to listen to is New year's day...well to a limited extent.

i don't care how popular it was, and thus unhip to like it, i still think the joshua tree is the best thing i've ever heard.

My favourite song by them is New years Day. They are a great band, but are very over rated.

They were great when they weren't over rated...like in the early to mid 80's...they were underground, at least on this side of the ocean. The 80's were definitely their time...what the hell happened to them in the 90's I have no idea.

i like the songs Gloria and Bad

I like everything up to and including Achtung, Baby, and a few songs after that.

It's pop, plain and simple. Not progressive, not psychedelic, not anything but pop.

It is ridiculous how bands get labeled as being "sellouts" or "overrated' and suddenly its as if the label has a direct effect on the music. Music is to be judged based on sound and lyrics. Whether or not U2 is now popular has no effect on how one should perceive the quality of the music. I have been listening to U2 since 1983 and the only thing I can say has suffered on recent albums is the quality of the lyrics. Where the lyrics on earlier albums had a more poetic or universal style, that seems to be absent from the recent songs. Otherwise, the guitar work on "HTDATB" has alot in common with songs from pre-"Zooropa" albums. The more I have listened to it, the better I like certain tracks...such as "All Because of You", "Crumbs From Your Table", "City of Blinding Lights", "Vertigo", "Miracle Drug". All I saying is that, yes, the older albums are better as whole works, but there are some instances of that same genius in some of the newer albums as well. Those who dismiss newer U2 works because of their popularity as a group are missing out.
