so yeah every now and then I get shit on the street for "looking like a hippy" or whatever. But the last two days have been out of control! First, I was walking around in the city with my friend going back to his house and we were barefoot and some guys on the street started giving us shit for not wearing shoes. Then we were waiting on the corner, by all these political people lobbying for Obama 08 and they were hastling everyone that was walking by, but they acted like my friend and I were from another planet and just toally ignored us. Which is totally fine by me, it was just so weird. Then my other friend and I were at best buy (replacing my keyboard which got fucked up over the weekend) and people kept mockingly giving us peace signs and someone said "Welcome to America" to us. It was so fucking bizarre! It's not like we look that ridiculous, just wearing "normal" clothes or whatever. BUT it was all chilll because on the walk back to my friends house the other day we passed an attractive hippie girl that was digging us, so that was chill. Anyone else get random shit from strangers?
When I was studying law in Santo Domingo, I had the weirdest conversation with this christian girl: She: To what group do you belong: Me: What group? She: You know, people like you Me: People like me? I seriously dont understand what you mean She: You know, that dress like that, with your sandals, and all your colors Me: I dont know.. to what group, do YOU belong?
ohh and I would have LOVED the best buy scene.... I would have been "America? But I was trying to go to India.. fucking Columbus! haha
Lol, "Welcome to America?" Obviously these people have never seen Hair... as I understand it, America is where you go after you "drop out" and leave Manchester, England, England. haha The "to what group do you belong" story is wonderful, too. (To paraphrase a very wise man, I belong to "the organization of the United Brothers of It's None of Your Damn Business.") People don't usually bother me about being myself. Once, I was walking barefoot on campus, and this girl asked me if I shave my arms. I've also recently had people ask me if I was drunk or high, and then try to take my picture, just because I was laying in a field at night. At a protest I went to recently, I had a car full of teenage boys staring at me and talking about me. As they drove away, one of them yelled out "I like weed, too!" Lol! I know they were trying to insult me, but that made my life. Seriously. After I made a pair of my jeans into bellbottoms, my mom asked me if I knew that the sixties were over. Haha. And my younger sister used to try to tease me by calling me a hippie (before I even knew much about them). People who step outside of the bounds of what is considered "normal" are eventually going to have someone bothering them about it. It's nice to be able to laugh about it, though, at least every once in a while.
The only things I've been hassled about recently were smelling flowers and for this white fluffy soft bicycle seat cover I've got. Otherwise it's just getting stared at by kids and certain people bugging me to start driving again.
Mehhh, I get shit about everything at school. I usually just laugh about it, those conformists aren't worth any more than that peace love Jane
I was sitting with some friends once, and I usually take off my shoes. So I was sitting with my shoes next to me and a guy (some dickhead) came up and poured some fruit puree or something into my shoe :l It was upsetting. He then cleaned it up because my friends went to the coordinator. And then he had to write me a note of apology haha, but I never actually got to see it :S That guy has had something against me since I started high school, I have no idea why. That's just one incident :l there were follow ups after that, like my 'friend' who is in love with the guy that poured the stuff in my shoe, makes comments like "do you want me to go call him?" whenever I take my shoes off. *sigh*
In Denver, the hippy hassle goes in waves, and it is on an upswing. The people who work at Swallow Hill (music venue and school) get called dirty hippie a lot. I'm designing a shirt to make fun of it.
A few years ago some kid came up to me in my photo class and said ... drop acid not bombs and flashed a peace sign at me with a corny smile in a sarcastic way ... and I just starred at him ... I had nothing to say... I was in shock lol .. it was soo weird ... people would hassle me once in awhille in school... but not much anymore I think it might be that iam in college and people are a tad bit more mature.. I hope lol but the people in high school were not as bad as my parents .. my parents have such negitive oppinions on my ideas and my beliefs and it sucks because they are my parents and I never got along with my dad so it sucks and its hard but they just need to respect me for who I am and if they cant then w/e ya kno People need to respect eatchother more ... thats why there are soo many problems Peace <3 katy
I don't really get hassled by anyone who isn't my brother and some of my friends. I have never called myself a hippie because I am just me...but if I had to be labled I guess thats the only one I wouldn't mind haha. One time one of my friends went on a rant behind my back and said I had no goals and label myself as a hippy, which both are not true. My brother just always try's to press my buttons but I don't really think he cares. The only time I get called a hippie is at college and it doesn't happen a lot. And it has never been a negative thing...more like hey hippy dude.
Let me think...in the past week a strange older lad spat in my face after calling me a "fucking twat freak" then in the school toilets some girls started taking the piss outa my tie dyed coat and wouldn't let me leave, on my school trip some younger boys started whispering "Peace dude" ina really mocking way, then at school a games teacher gave me a really weird look as I was walking past with a head scarf on (made me feel an inch high) and last friday my friend and I were walking home and this boy started giving me the peace sign in a really mocking way. I just said "peace" back but then he turned his hand around and said "Fuck off!" It was too much. Why do people intentionally try to hurt others? I noticed that people love to take the piss out of hippies but when it comes to any of the other counter cultres they don't. No one insults the punks, no one insults the goths. Why? Because hippies are the only people brave enoug to want love and peace...apparently there's something wrong with that. Peace and love brothers and sisters everywhere xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
that sucks sister. But I wouldn't go crazy, I think lots of other cultures get insulted, it's just you're not part of them. Oh well... people are strange
Haha Goths get their fair share....I'm not a gothic in any sense what so ever. But I see people make fun of them all the time. I personally don't like the whole where dark clothing and heavy metal scene. Wow someone spit in your face thats terrible. I don't know where you people live but geeze....I mean does this happen to you guy's very often?
Yeah I get hassled all the time by other people. I lived thirty minutes away from the original Woodstock site and people were still relentless about calling me names and giving me the finger. I was called a terrorist once. SF is a bit different. I still get weird looks, and get insulted, but it's not as often as it was living in NY. It's probably about twice to three times a week I get insulted.
Does it make sence to walk barefoot in the city, just to make some statement to yourself or others ??
But walking barefoot in a city puts you in several dagerouse situations, you could get cut, and listen I was really drunk about 11 weeks ago and had my foot cut comming out of a lake... It took weeks to stop hurting and I still have a scar ! The foot is very sensitive and its one of the worste parts of your body to injur because you use it all day. But the choice is yours, hope you don“t hurt yourself !!
I don't barefoot to make a statement. It was a beautiful day out and it feels nice. I don't really think it's anymore dangerous than walking in the sandals I usually wear. I make a habit of avoiding glass and other baddies shoed or not. Aside from that I've been walking barefoot for a while, and have even hiked mountains without shoes, so my feet are pretty resistant to most debris, provided I avoid LARGE pieces of glass.
hehehe I love walking around barefoot but only on natural grounds (sand, grass etc..) Its extremely unconfortable to walk on ciment, and I still think its dangerouse.
