Almost 700 posts, and recently a couple of people have mentioned that they don't know who I am.

It occurred to me that I've never actually introduced myself. So...

Hi! I'm Chris. I'm in the Army and in Iraq. I have too much free time, but that's great...because the alternative would be sweating my ass off and getting shot at and blown up. I'm very happily married, though it is hard being away for so long.

I don't particularly like working for the man, but I do love my particular job. I have more opportunities to help people and save lives than most Soldiers get. And I work with interesting people. But mostly I do it because it's good for my family, and for the government pension.

My plan is to get out, go work for the post office or something to finish my 20 years for the pension. I never want to go to war again. I need to be able to go home at the end of the work day. Then, my wife and I will retire to her family farm in Thailand and live pretty well on my pension and our earnings from the farm.

So, if you see me perving, don't take it too seriously. I am a dreamer, and my heart just can't be true. But for reals is for reals, and I am married for reals. I love her more than anyone or anything I could even imagine.

Alright. I will now answer any questions you might have.

Hey, I was just playing with the touche, douche thing. I had nothing else to say.

Um, some Soldiers smoke hookah tobacco. Lots smoke cigarettes. I just quit cigs...had my last one on July 8.

I don't know anyone smoking anything other than that. We might try getting some calea zacatechichi, but we have to find out if that's legal for us to have or not. From what I understand, it really only affects you when you're dreaming...so, it should be alright.

It makes sense. No one hates war more than someone who actually has to fight one. And, thank God, there is down-time now.

The big wigs in power sit in ivory towers and send young men & women off to fight while they sit on their big behinds and get fatter and richer.....
I hope you all come home safely and soon.....:)

Thanks, me too. The only really bad part of it is losing a year or more of your personal life. It's a bit like spending a year on another planet with a small to medium sized group of people. Even though you communicate with Earth regularly, you still wonder what it will be like when you get back, how you'll feel about it with your changed perspective, and what you would have done if you'd stayed instead of leaving-- how different you and your life would have been.

And then there's those who don't come back or come back without limbs or come back with head problems...but you don't think about that...but it's all such a shame. There's not one good thing about any of this for anyone. Nothing really good can come of this sort of thing, ever, for anyone.

We're all damned fools for picking up weapons and going off to fight because some other damned fool tells us to. And that goes for every soldier and sailor in every country that's ever been, and every cop and every gangster and everyone who thought they were fighting for anything other than their own, personal, immediate self-defense.

Whew! But they got me. It's a good gig, from a normal, mostly blind, worldly perspective. Pays well enough, lots of benefits, some prestige, great opportunities now and later on, great job security (well...I won't get fired, anyway) and quick promotions.

It's all pretty demented and evil.

Perv away. It's fun and harmless. Great to get to know you a bit more.
How did you make the decision to do your job?
Be well and be safe out there.

Thanks, Lea. Yeah, as soon as you get to be able to add friends, add me.

I guess it was always at the back of my mind. I remember watching a clip on Sesame Street in the 70s about paratroopers, and I thought that was what I wanted to do.

My parents were very much against it. All my friends were against it, and all the girlfriends I've ever had were against it. So I just never joined up. But I didn't make anything else work, either. I just stayed stoned and lived with some people who were as lazy as I am. We figured if we lived simply and shared everything, each of us only really had to work 4-5 months out of the year. Well, that was cool...until my car broke down for the last time and we had no way to keep it going. So, we all went our separate ways and I joined the Army.

It was a great choice for me. I love it. I despise war and all that goes with it...but I do feel like this is something I am born to...at least for a while.
