I read an article on the "5 second rule" and it got me wondering about how other people react to "germy" situations. Do you follow the 5 second rule--as in, if you drop something on the floor, will you still pick it up and eat it? How much time has to elapse before you won't consider eating it anymore? How often do you wash your hands-- Before you eat? After you touch something "gross"? (what do you consider gross?), every hour? What common practices that others engage in do you think are icky? Which practices that others consider unsanitary do you not think twice about?
Depends on the surface, if it's at home yeah sure, whatever but not in public, not on tiles at the mall or anything. On the grass yeah sure.
I'm not much of a germaphobe. I wash my hands at all of the normal times: after the bathroom, before handling food, before eating And I get really grossed out by public restrooms and try to avoid touching anything in them at all But other than that i'm not over the top about avoiding germs I dont eat food off the floor though, thats gross
A germaphobe would use the term "gross" though, see what you really were looking for to solidify your statement was "eat food off the floor? Hell yes, just adds flavour".
There is no 5-second rule in the food and hospitality industry. If you drop anything on the floor in the kitchen, it's contaminated. But for me personally, it depends on the location. If it's in my house or outside in a low traffic area, I'll give it the 5 second rule. Most public locations, hell no.
Nobody actually waits 5 seconds either, I just tried this for shits and giggles, dropped a jelly bean on the grass. I picked it up within 2 seconds, dropped it again and physically counted out 5 seconds. If you're waiting 5 seconds you aren't eating it I'm sorry. Unless that jelly bean bounces around and you can't find it. Or if it's black cause nobody like that shit anyway, eww liquorice. And if you do like liquorice then you probably are waiting 5 seconds or more because you know what? Your taste buds and sense of flavour is fucked anyway.
I never eat stuff that has fallen on the ground except if it seems a clean piece of grass. I've grabbed and ate stuff that fell on the ground (grass) during bbq-ing But really, not a habit. I do hate getting stuff greasy in my house, like a remote or the ps controller and that's why i often (quickly, not in a phobic way ) wash my hands after i ate something messy or fatty. I guess slightly above average. But yeah, i just can't stand it if you ate like some chocolate and then grab the ps controller with the same fingers.
I have a Golden Retriever, if something hits the ground its gone. As far as out of the house, have you seen the degenerates in the public sector, I aint eating nothing I dropped.
No, if it's dropped, it's binned, although I did wash a big steak once that I dropped. Wash my hands a lot, and use sanitised.. tissues for sneezing into, Got to tell you how I got into sanitiser.. taking a long journey, stopped at the services, had the little one with me, we went to the toilet then to wash our hands.. water was too hot, a lady gave me some sanitiser for the little ones hands.. never been without it since.
Washing hands is pretty much one of the first things I do when I come home from work or wherever. Maybe it's like saying "I am DONE yay". Other than that – just the regular after the bathroom, before and after cooking/eating... I do carry a small hand sanitizer in my bag at all times. I randomly use it if I feel like it. I don't eat food off the floor. When it comes to cleaning – I'd say I'm normal. I do kind of clean the bathroom every day. It doesn't take long and it feels good. I find it very relaxing. Just give me a bathroom to clean, that's my meditation. I also wipe my phone down a lot, like…daily. And change bedding very, very often. All that feels nice, so I do it. It's not very time consuming or difficult. Oh and I don't know about yall, but here we take our shoes off as soon as we're inside. I like that.
I actually do this as well. Certainly after using public transportation. At your service! I even do this at friends places where its not a custom. I do not like to chill inside for hours with my shoes on. Probably because i never did this at home. Shoes at the door please!
I think if candy falls on the floor it's longevity is basically forever. It's fun to spill candy and then find it months later in a corner and eat it. It's like you live in a candy castle.
Over use of these "sanitizing" hand cleaners, kitchen cleaners, bathroom cleaners, whole house air purifiers, weaken people's immune systems... Then they wonder why every time they step out of the house they get sick. The human immune system needs exposure to germs in order to stay healthy... This doesn't mean total slobs are healthier, but there is such a thing as "too clean".
I'm very relaxed about germs, wash my hands at obvious times, don't use any form of anti-bacterial soaps/sprays (except white vinegar in water for kitchen and bathroom cleaning) and rarely get sick. Food on the floor is a case by case basis but I'm at the less-worried-about-it end of the spectrum. I share Asmodean's disgust with greasiness though.
It was recently brought to my attention that this is a custom in much of the world. No one really does it here. I kick my shoes off when i'm home just because I want to be comfortable, but I don't ask that guests do it and i've never been asked to remove my shoes at anyone else's house...it would actually feel a bit forward to do so,I only do it if i'm really comfortable at someone's home I think it never became a thing here because we dont get a lot of snow and dont really have to worry about tracking in snow and mud in the winter...thats my theory anyways
I do wash my hands alot but I'm also handlin' cow & chicken shit on a daily basis, often 2-3 times a day. No I do not eat things off the floor though I have before. My favorite clean related phrase is "God made dirt, dirt don't hurt
