If you don't know what geocaching is....go to geocaching.com to learn about what it is. More or less there are hidden items and you find ones that are near you and it will give a description and you try to find them. Then you are supposed to re-hide it, you can take the items inside as long as you leave at least an equal contribution for the next person to find. There is quite some list of them around me.

I was wondering if anyone has ever tried this hobby? I never had, but have been interested for a while.

Would it be better to search for the geocache during the daytime, or at night? There's a geocache listed as in a park near me, should I go now and look for it or wait till daytime. If I did it at night I would have to take a flashlight I guess. Idk, this seems kinda cool.

i've gone along with a geochacher once, but that's about the extent of it. does seem like a fun thing to do, i just never got around to seriously giving it a try.

i would think daytime. you can see what you're looking for, and it's illegal to be in most parks after dark.

I think it might be a little sketchy at night, but I might look for some of these this weekend. I'm still not completely clear on the rules tho, so I'm gonna have to figure out exactly what I'm supposed to do with it when I find it. I'm not sure if I can hide it anywhere I want?

i think you hide it the same place you found it. if you want to hide something somewhere else, you have to create a new cache. i think.

I'm a somewhat experienced geo cacher *pushes up nerd glasses with forefinger*

you probably have a better chance at finding it in the daytime, except then muggles might see you and you don't want that..

hmmm, actually, you should go scope the place out now, it depends on where it's hidden, you might be able to see it..

    do you have a gps?

I have a phone with gps and there are geocaching apps...not sure if I should be more worried about "muggles" or sketchy ass people in the park at night. It says its a camouflaged jar about 4 inches wide by 5 inches tall. Probably be pretty hard to find that in a park at night.

I read somewhere on the geocaching site that some geocaches travel great distance...like from one side of the country to the other. Do these have a certain destination? People moving it a little by little?

camouflaged? then it might be in a tree or bush...you can read the logs where other people found it and get clues..also check when it was last found, if it hasn't been found in years then the cache may longer be there..

travel bugs are dog tags with tracking #'s that people place around items in the cache that are meant to travel, they have a destination and you just have to look up their tracking number to see where the owner wants it to go..people usually pick these up from caches if they're doing a road trip

    Hello,

ain't that part of the fun ;)?

Well, I never did it myself, but I would like to give geocaching a shot if someone would take me by the hand (maybe Rainy takes her nerd glasses and visits me in the Black Forest ;)). I found a few single caches more or less by accident. Nearby in the woods there is a multi cache. But without an GPS receiver it's hard to cope with, because you need the coordinates to solve puzzles to find the next part of the multi cache.

    Regards
    Gyro

I did one one time that was suppposed to be at a bus stop near my house.. I didnt find it and there was another one that was supposed to be under a certain brick a couple blocks away from my house... I went there and the bricks were a brand new brick wall, so both of those ventures were a no-go. I don't have a GPS that will put in M/D/S so it's a future endeavor, but yea i wanna do it for real.

I don't see how you could "hide" something at a bus stop...leave it on the seat? Somebody probably took it and that's why you didn't find it. I would think it would have to be hidden somewhere that only someone who is looking for it would likely find it.

    I've cached for years.
    Good times.

I'm currently caught up in Ingress, at the moment, though.

I used to do it and sponsored a few. What we did, Was use our jeeps/4x4 or any way you can get there. You would find a plaque or metal fab piece that would say cache #X. We did it nation wide from hilly billy back roads in my area to Moab Utah's canyons.

I used to add two with-in the same GPS site, You have 20-50ft of work to do in all directions and it could be under a rock, Pile of leaves or the 'trail' sign itself most would pass by lol.

Take a pic of you with it when you find it in the spot and write down where you found it. There would be a # on back to call and you would be sent info etc to fill out and a email to send pic and a addy to send item.

If I get a call saying they are good to go, The plaque shows up with the same info, They have won that months prize. I did a 8k winch on one and a custom made swing away tire carrier with intergraded hitch and D-ring tabs. $500 winch and my bumpers run around $600 depending the options.

We stopped doing it, believe it or not, Some fuck stick tried to sue us. Judge laughed and guy left cussing and kicking for a 48 hour contempt of court lol.
Other reason(s), I was out myself and ran across meth sludge and followed it to a lab. I always carry when im out though, Reasons like this.
Last was a trap. I wouldn't go into the small area and approached it from a angle that I saw the trap. It didn't help I found two game cams too that led me to this thinking. It was a pit dug out and set up by people who knew what they were doing.

We called the sheriff and he had to call federal authority's. I brought up the point these people are sick tickets and it wouldn't surprise me if the next was a explosive.
I wasn't into it much but for the fun of people doing it for a free this or that. My bumpers are cool, But not worth your life. So we stopped altogether.
Now, You can join a cache club, Or most are known members of forums or something to tie you to the event even though nation wide. Plus when many people use the same and type in the same are, It triggers LEO and they will monitor the area. Just be safe and prepared for anything and a partner is always best. Let a person know the exact are you are going to, And when you will be back.
