I was thinking, how many people in here actually listen to heavy metal, and what kind of heavy metal!? Traditional Metal, often refered to as the original, the true metal... You probably all know it from, the early black sabbath, iron maiden, judas priest and many others... Thrash Metal, a genre of metal not very well known, well not by other than name anyways... It was played in the mid-late 80's and was all about the choppy riffs and the machingun drumming... It was played by bands such as Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Sodom and many others Black Metal, this is a hard one to actually get right, because it's very spilt up... There is new black metal, that's just satanic lyrics, high pinched voices, heavy drumming and tremolo riffing. Tho I don't really know any bands of this genre The genre was most domminating is norway, where artists burned down churches and killed eachother However the old school stuff was divided in to yet two more: Raw: This is like primal music, raw as the "name" says, it's stuff like: Dark Throne and Dark Funeral Melodic: This genre tried by the help of melodic lyrics and keyboards to create a unique atmosphere, like Emperor and Dimmu Borgir Doom Metal, the seed to this genre was planted by Sabbath (as so many others)... It was the slow evil riffs, the heave grove and the bleak lyrics... But the genre first became real when it was taken by Candlemass and St. Vitus. Death Metal, when thrash pretty much died in the early 90's death took over... This is pretty much the same as thrash, just harder... It was taken by band like, Slayer (that with reign in blood turned to death), Death and ofcourse Possessed... Power Metal, this genre is alomst only european and is devided in to three main types. German: The german power metal is very heavy and has less keyboard, wich actually to me seems a bit weird, as it is german... Very headbangish... Known from amogst others Running Wild, Wizard and Steel Attack Italian: The italian power metal is melodic, it's got heavy but awesome lyrics and it's very speedy. Names include Rhapsody, Labyrinth and Domine Swedish: This genre is actually a sorta mix of the two... Known from, Cryonic Temple, HammerFall, and Earlier Lost Horizon... Special request: Helloween Progressive Metal, I don't really know very much about this genre, but it's def. special... Has very elaborate lyrics and is really advandced music, sounds great... The ones that kicked off this genre wwere Queensryche, Fates Warning and Dream Theater... Grindcore, when thrash evolved to death, some people just couldn't stop the rush, they needed it harder, more mean, more death, more scary... More Grindcore... There's a fight amogst bands to be even grosser... The bands that kicked this sick but swesome ganre off are Carcass, Napalm Death and Cannibal Corpse... Subgenres Viking Metal, as this is a sub genre it's not really a whole diferent style, it's actually just a lyrical style you write about vikings and norse mythology. It's played by bands such as Amon Amarth, Enslaved, Ensiferum and Doomsword... Folk Metal, it's actually just folk music lyrics dipped in metal, and is often seen fusioning with viking metal, but not always. Bands are amongst others: Tuatha De Danaan, Elvenking and Tyr... Symphonic Metal, you can't say symphonic just by itself like that it often binds to a genre, so you end up with Symphonic Power Metal bands like Nightwish, Dark Moor and Kamelot... Symphonic Death Metal bands like Hollenthon and Eternal Tears of Sorrow... Symphonic Black Metal bands like Dimmu Borgir and Emperor... But this thing was probably kicked off by Savatage and Rage... There are also other types of metal, but we're just gonna forget them
I also forgot Nu Metal and Industrial Metal But Vedic metal is like asian metal isn't it!? I'm not really all too in to it
I'm into the heavy metal of the 60's and 70's, the classic blues rock style heavy metal of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and the heavy metal bands of the 70's.
Well, from your list I like Black Sabbath most, but I consider that pre-(heavy) metal. Where it comes to metal, at the moment I'm mostly in black/viking/folk metal but I have a thing for tradional metal too, older Iron Maiden especially. I used to love power metal as well and occasionally listen to it again but not very often anymore. But there're some great albums in this genre! I also like some doom metal, but even more if it is combined with stoner rock elements, so it isn't really metal most of the time imo.
I like lots of metal, but I'd have to say that thrash metal is the one I listen to the most. I just like the way it sounds.
Prog-Metal Bands I am listening to: Opeth, Disillusion, Meshuggah, Wolverine and Pain of Salvation. But I also like other metal-genres .
I'm all for thrash. and Megadeth>Metallica. For anyone into power metal, check out Dragonforce. Power with a thrash edge. I think its good shit.
I only liked their song Valley of the damned, and I prefer the demoversion of that song. But they're quite popular among the power metalfans indeed.
It's just called grindcore No metal But that's awesome, didn't figure you as a metal chick, hehe... Try some, especially napalm death really rocks!
Okay, grindcore without metal, then sorry But as you see, I'm a girl full of surprises Thanks for the advice, I'll try some Napalm Death out
Yeah you most certain are, that's cool And yeah, napalm death rocks! Pretty brain dead too they are, they've only really said one smart thing "change your life"
I dont listen to a lot of metal. Only Megadeth, Pantera, Slayer sometimes, Black Sabbath, Black Label Society, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, and some others. I highly suggest listening to Iced Earth.
CoB suck, I don't like their attitude on their latest album and the only worthy song they ever brought out was Downfall. Okay, that's a bit too harsh, but no, they don't rub me the right way at all... Iced Earth on the other hand are VERY good in my opinion. I love them. My favourite genre would be black metal but I picked everything because I listen to bits of everything from time to time.
Hmm... Never heard their latest album Well I actually haven't heard that much, but one of my friends made me listen to a little, and I thought it rocked! Right now I mostly just listen to, machine head, cradle of filth, six feet under and king diamond... Those I know for sure are good
