I would like to hear other opinions about genetic conditioning. The thought scares me, im constantly thinking about it. We've already begun something that we wont be able to keep controll over. once we start using genetic engineering for simple things, it will run our world and mother nature will be unheard of. we will take power into our hands and leave nothing to nature. -Eruna
Genetic engineering has existed in some form or another since Gregor Mendel (sp?) first discovered it (and possibly even before then). At its basic form, it is simply cross-breeding plants to produce a specific desired crop. Not really harmful. Some of it can even be beneficial, depending on who you ask (i.e. rice can now be produced with extra vitamin A to combat blindness in children). The trouble is that we don't always know the side effects right away (but, I would argue, most people who are starving to death don't give a shit whether or not they're going to get cancer 20 years from now, as they have slightly more pressing needs...) I, personally, am mixed on the whole genetically modified food issue. Now, if you're talking about genetically modified humans, that is pretty creepy, but it doesn't worry me on a daily basis. Personally, I'm against all advanced fertility treatments (pills are one thing, but if you're going to spend $20,000 on invitro-fertilization, you might as well adopt a child who's already here for Christ's sake). Just keep in mind that no one (so far as I know) will ever make you genetically modify your kids, but other than that there's not much you can do. -Kate
Personaly I kind of like the idea... It's like a puzzle... Figure out how it works, then how you can change to make it better (or rather make it to suit you)
my reply was supposed to be a humorous post aimed towards trekkers (or anyone familiar with the backstories of Star Trek)
Seems to me that it's the motivation of personal gain, i.e. money that will lead to horrible results. Mendel was a monk and a scientist who's interest was purely for the knowledge but we've come a long way since then both in scientific progress as well as how to capitalize on it. there are many biologists that are in the boat that they're doing it to advance our kind and for the knowledge but they also have the cashman knocking on their door at the same time.
seems like it will be a big discrimanatory problem in say the next 150 years, in the unlikely event we make it that long.
I remember in the mid to late 90's nearly one thousand farmers in India burnt fields and fields of genetically modified food to the ground......I don't remember the details to it, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to be eating that shit either. If they were meant to have all that extra crap in them, then Mother Nature would make them that way. Nature is not a force to be fucked with, and we are finding that out already.
I studied genetics briefly in order to tick off my activist mum It's a wonderful science..unfortunately commerce is forcing it into the market wayyy too fast and endangering every single person on this friggin earth. Some thing need to stay in the lab until they have honestly been studied for generations.
we as a race were geneticaly enginered and put here on earth.. why would it have stoped there.. it has been in exsistance from the beinging of mankind
I kind of feel the same way about genetically modified foods as I would genetically modified humans. We are all one and the same.
