everyone has an opinion I guess....... maybe you should listen to something when peter gabriel was in the band... like foxtrot perhaps??
i listened to a bit of Foxtrot a while back but i don't remember it so well. i prefer some of the songs of Gabriel and Collins in the 80's when they went seperate.
Can't stand them, early stuff pretentious, and later stuff just stupid...but thats my opinion and I don't like prog rock
That's pretty right on the money. But there were at least 3 albums in the middle where they had it together: Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, & Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Before that, they were a bit sloppy. After that, they were pop. You gotta pay attention to who's in the lineup, too. Phil on drums, Gabby on vox and Hacky on gtr. Accept no substitutes. And IGNORE ANYTHING YOU HEAR ON THE RADIO!
ELP are rubbish. They only made noise using synths. Styx? Aren't they the "Babe"-dudes? Oh my god! The rest of the bands you listed are great though.
Hey I'm not even that big of a prog-guy, but Genesis from about 71-75 is probably some of my favorite music ever. What have you heard by them? Why didn't you like it?
Dude, are you serious? Styx better than Genesis? ELO is probably closer to Genesis than any of the other bands you mentioned-- Genesis' goal wasn't to be the best at their instruments and jam (Yes, ELP), but to couple well-written pop melodies with the twisted sensibilities of Gabriel's trippy, theatrical stories and poetry.
I think they're somewhat melodically similiar-- in a Beatles-plus-overkill kind of way. But that sentence fragment didn't really answer what I asked you..
Haha maybe you won't like my opinion but I love Genesis, Phil Collins is very amusing person and makes music full of joy and good mood.
Peter Gabriel has beautiful and balanced voice, he's one from the best progressive rock singers. He can rule his voice from the whispering to the screaming in the songs. I prefer Genesis with Peter Gabriel as a singer and Phill Collins as a drummer... When Phill bacame a frontman, Genesis became a pop-rock band...
a lot of people who say they don't like prog DO NOT realize how vast the genre really is. prog has so many sub genres..space, fusion, canterbury, folk, ect. and includes so many different countries..even ones you wouldn't think: brazil, chile, aulstralia, argentina, japan, yugoslavia, isreal, iceland..for example. check out the underground prog bands on www.progarchives.com. as far as prog, there is something for everyone really. if you can't find at least one band obscure (or popular) you my have a very VERY refined taste in music and might not be a fan of music. do a throughoh search of the genre before bashing it cos there are a lot of HIDDEN gems. i just don't understand how ppl can bash a genre they haven't fully investigated. I myself don't even like a lot of the popular bands and believe the obscure is better as far as prog.
well I haven't checked out any obscure prog bands, but i hate every single band anyone has mentioned so far..Styx-worst band ever, Jethro Tull-horrible, ELO-worse than Styx.....I don't like when rock music is mixed with the elements that make up prog rock, I just find it gaudy...I like Pink Floyd, but I never considered them in that genre. I guess I like a few King Crimson songs, but again , others rave about them, I just think they have a few songs I like I forgot Yes, they annoy me, just sounds like pretentious music student rock, its lacks any real feeling to me. I just don't like this style and in this band especially I despise the singing
Genesis was a great band. When Peter Gabriel left the band went downhill. When Steve Hackett left that was the final nail in the coffin. Every album they recorded before Then There Was Three were great albums.
