I was just curious what some folks think about gender equality? I know that the women's rights movement has gone a long way over time. I was always under the understanding that equality was the goal?

You have females that rally support under the equality movement, in order to make sure that females rights are respected, and that they should be allowed into any all male institution. I am sure many people remember all the various news stories about women suing places in order to gain entry into something that is all male.

If equality was the goal in the first place... then how can women defend a place like Curves Fitness? Women have fought hard to get where they are at for equality and now they discriminate against men by refusing them entry into thier centers. Curves is a prime example of what I am describing.

In Wisconsin... a male took Curves fitness to court stating that the places rules were unjust... by not allowing males entry into the fitness centers.

The judge ruled against him and said that the women should be able to have a place where they can feel comfortable when they work out. WTF? I mean...really really think about it. Does that not go against the same equal rights that women themselves fought for?

For a court to rule agianst the man but to rule for a female... on the same issue... really makes me wonder about this equality stuff. What is so equal to that?

Gain rights then trample on the others?

In BC... a court ruled against all female fitness centers and required them to be unisex. To me... that is very fair indeed.

On the other hand, I myself can also understand why a female would want to join a fitness center that does not allow men. There are alot of "pervs" out there, and I can understand how a female would want to be able to focus on her fitness... without having to be be cautious of thier enviornment the entire time they are there.

But... god forbid if anyone tries to open an all male fitness center! THEY GET CLOSED DOWN BY PISSED OFF FEMINISTS who use the courts to do it!

I just don't understand it... this equality thing... seems like it its now going in a different direction... doing the same thing they fought so hard against.

I guess what really made me think about this was when I noticed there was a curves in our area. I thought... what the hell, they are cheap and I would go and get my honey a membership. She had been talikng of joining something. When I went in to buy her the membership... the ladies at the desk asked me to leave immediately. I asked them why, when I was just trying to get my wife a membership as a gift. They told me that men were not welcomed on the premisis and that if I wanted to get her a membership, I had to get her to come in! Then they asked me to leave again... and put her hand near the phone. This is in a mall... so I am sure she would have called security if I had even attempted to question her anymore. I left.

    Equality?

I now look at it in a different light and do not know just how much faith I can have in a movement that demands equality for something then tramples over others... doing the same thing they are against!

I was just curious about how alot of females felt about this subject. Do the mass of the female gender feel that this is proper and fair to males... or to thier "cause"?

    Az

I agree, places like Curves are unfair and inappropriate.

I realize they make some solid arguments for being segregationist -- aside from the problem of "pervs" as you mentioned, there is the issue of a gym becoming a singles club. At the campus gym, if you go in at the wrong time, you not only see males flirting with females, but females wearing push-up bras and making sure their make-up is just right. That sort of vibe can't be blamed on sleazy guys, but it's still uncomfortable. Also, many women are very self-conscious about their bodies and don't want to be seen by the big muscle men that are stereotypically associated with Golds Gym.

That said, I would not think of setting foot in one of those places. It is discriminatory.

I also would not consider sending my child (when I have one) to an all-girl school. They make the argument that girls perform better when segregated from males, and that in mixed sex classrooms boys tend to volunteer answers more and get more of the teacher's attention. But, if we shelter girls, how can we expect them to perform on par when they are suddenly faced with competition with boys?

If we want female-only institutions, we must accept male-only institutions... Which alone would set us back how many decades? Then what's next -- back to racial segregation (not that most cities have fully integrated yet)?

Of course, I'm all for "girls night out" -- it is nice to spend an evening with just girl friends... But I also have no problem with my fiance going out with just "the guys" to see a game or something. But, in both cases, it's more of an excuse for each of us to spend time alone with our friends than anything that's necessarily gender exclusive.

Curves plays Christian techno too. Blah!
Maybe qualify what you're saying, & say SOME women. I'm sure not all men want to be held responsible for the actions of SOME men.
    Thanks. ;)

well just about curves and women's only gyms... i can totally understand why women might want to have a place where they dont have to worry about being self conscious or hit on and stuff like that and just work out... however, if women want to be able to have that, i see absolutly no reason why men shouldnt be able to either.

i agree..i couldn't give two shits about curves.

I think private organizations(i assume curves counts as private) should be allowed to restrict membership to whomever they want.

It is sort of like Augusta National not allowing female golfers.

edit: ironically, today michelle wie said she will try and qualify for the Men's US open. I somehow don't think that a man would be allowed to qualify for the women's US open...
