Excellent production at the stages, not so excellent production in any of the other aspects of running a strong festival. A bit overpriced for all the corners cut. Security firms under federal investigation (where'd all the confiscated drugs go?) etc etc. An amazing festival in the past, not so shiny and wonderful now a days. Of course with the right friends any experience like this can be fun, so YMMV.

No, jay caliro's death was an accidental drug overdose. Please don't spread rumors that hurt the scene.

Accidental Drug overdose or drug land turf battle? I'm not convinced he was just some kid who did too many drugs. I have to wonder if its not related to the Nitrous gangs who were allowed to run rampant. When you let security break down like that, anything is possible. Their security has been criticized as being too little in the wrong places with no authority or numbers to actually do anything. This is an example of the festival promoters cutting corners to save a buck. Secondly, the FBI is probing (haven't heard any updates in a while) the security firms because they reportedly 'lost' 100's of tanks and other drugs that they supposedly confiscated.
I was a large supporter of this event and company, starting in 1998. I saw some things I didn't like starting in 2001, and raised my voice to help improve the event. Funneling 10,000 people through a thorough checkpoint is fine, but not when there's ONLY 1 checkpoint. Every year is the promise of improvements, every year is the promise of making it better the next year. Until 2009 happened and people didn't feel safe, the nitrous gangs took over, and a kid died. How's that for constant improvement? I'm all about supporting independent music, venues, and promoters. I spend my money like a weapon. But I don't care how independent you are, if you're incompetent, you don't deserve my cash.

Accidental drug overdose. Ask anyone in jays family and they will tell you the same.

And yes vibes has many problems, but no one was murdered.... yet.

According to the coroner and the family, absolutely not.

This looks like an amazing time and is close to you.

i hear and agree with you. but dont you think its silly to say that the festival promoters tried to cover up the kids death by saying it was a drug overdose Instead of a gang related murder? i think both scenarios say a lot about the security/scene at the vibes. thank god i live close, because camping there does seem to make the experience risky.

You don't have to go to big festivals to have a good time. There are a tone of great lineups out there for under $50. And let me tell you its so much easier on the everything to go to an event with 1000 people as opposed to one with 15-20,000. Everything is less except the fun.

As for vibes, I guess it really doesn't matter too much except for this - A drug overdose is usually a personal thing. No matter how good your security is, if someone wants to shoot too much heroin, or whatever, they'll find a way. And it doesn't necessarily reflect too much on the promoter. I've been in some really great festivals with great everything but there's that one group of kids...
If the other scenario was true, (and this is merely rumor and conjecture, but there is some sense in it) that the kid was independently running his own tank and the thugs came and beat him down as drug gangs are pretty territorial, and he died, then its on the security and promoters for letting the thugs have free reign of the place to begin with. And don't forget it was city run property, so what were the local cops doing? As you go along, there is a lot incentive for a lot of people to want to believe that scenario 1 was the truth - self induced drug overdose.
It doesn't matter, the bottom line is this - Gathering of the vibes is run by an outfit that would be better served trimming their wings and hosting events with less than 10,000 people in attendance. They just don't know how (and will never learn, apparently, after 10 years of doing this) to handle big crowds. They blow their money on production and overpaying talent and then skimp on the wrong services like proper security. If they focused on a smaller event, I'd bet it would be very successful and everybody would have a good time.

and you can bet that the nitrous mafia will be all over the event this year, and that the festival security will not be able to stop them. so really, it all depends on how they are going to act. unless you have relations with them or some reason to believe that they are good people, then i'd suggest not only not bringing your own tank, but also just staying away from nitrous alltogether. if a drug is going to bring a bad scene, then it needs to be cut out.
