What games do you know of that were fantastic, but either lost their way or are just flat out under-appreciated? I'll start with Jet Force Gemini on N64. That game was amazing! With the exception of control schemes... which is common with most games on that platform. Those damn controllers!! The game had a lot of depth though and plenty of collectible items! One of the first story driven games I can remember that you had to go back to certain levels to find and unlock different aspects of the game. And enjoyed it!! 3 different playable characters (technically 4) that are unlocked as you progress through the game, who you have to search for. And the storyline and atmosphere of the game is great. You get to shoot giant ants from outer space, trying to get headshots so you can collect their heads when they pop off and in turn unlock different game modes. If you've never played it, I'd definitely recommend it. As long as you can deal with horrible control formats lol.
Contra The classics are on Nes and Snes, I especially like the Alien Wars where you are a commando in the future fighting all kinds of interesting alien creatures. I think there was an attempt at a PS2 game but didn't do all that well. This is a series which could benefit from newer graphics, the ability to make a more in depth storyline and retain some of the multi-style gameplay that was found in the originals. The weapons were really bad ass for the time and there was kind of a thrill a minute type feel to the game, if someone could capture that vibe in a newer console format it could be spectacular.
I got a kick out of playing Full Throttle and imagine it could be cool if given a graphic makeover and done like Skyrim or Fallout. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bpw9vTORlSk https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_Throttle_(1995_video_game)
Haven't heard of that one. Looks pretty good for a point and click adventure type game. Graphics are pretty sweet. For that era of gaming.
Oh yes! I smashed the first game lol and the second I don't remember finishing but I remember it was really difficult. Sim city 2000 was my fav too. I tried the sim city 3 and 4 and didn't like it. 2000 I played a lot at school when we were allowed.
Jedi Knight of course. Earthworm Jim (kind of kidding here. I recall it was just such a hilarious character and game :-D)
I never got into earthworm jim and they always reminded me of toe jam and earl never played them either. but jedi knight...I was thinking that before I came across this thread. that was a great game. it was the first good pc game I ever played, I would love to see that and another game I loved that I mentioned somewhere here is gex. not sure how they would reboot it but I would buy it on launch day if they did. heck...after I am done with this action pack I been playing I may just hook up my ps1 and go through the gex series again...probly not but maybe.
Bungie's Oni. A missed opportunity, if there ever was one. The game combined stylish hand-to-hand combat with some gun action in a pure 3D environment, using a graphical style that was heavily inspired by the works of Japanese animation studios from the 1990's. Sadly, Microsoft's acquisition of Bungie at the turn of the millenia forced Bungie to wrap up Oni ahead of schedule, leaving the game into an unfinished state and preventing Oni from reaching it's full potential, because Microsoft assigned Bungie immediately into developing their XBox killer app, Halo. This was a really sad turn of events, because Oni had the potential to be so much better. The anime-style graphics and the martial arts combat in particular were cool aspects. Instead, what we ended up getting had a rushed level design, entire missions omitted, as well as the promised multi-player mode, and the whole thing just gave off this really unfinished feel. Ever since playing the original, I've been wishing for some proper Japanese studio to pick up the intellectual property and give us the Oni we all deserve. I wish someone could get Platinum Games interested.
When you say reboot I am thinking more of game series are are still being produced today but have taken an unstaisfying direction, rather then games that have not seen an installment in several years. The game that immediately comes to my mind is the Resident Evil series. The narrative has become so absurd and convoluted, with game play mechanics that is so incompetently executed. I would really like to see the developers restrain themselves and get back to the simplicity of the first 3 games.
I like the bigger world that resident evil has become but I really think they can do some games like the originals once in a while.
Technically speaking, the first Resident Evil has been remade already years ago, and that version was remastered for Gen 7 and 8 consoles recently. Also, Capcom recently officially announced a bona-fide remake of RE2. If it sells nice figures following it's release, we might see the whole series getting rebooted in it's classic form.
Impossible Creatures, for the PC. You combine different animals to make an army of combined creatures to attack your opponent's own army of custom creatures. It was fun as shit, but most people have never even heard of it, and it's so old it doesn't work on any of computers anymore.
I love the RE remake and I am really looking forward to the remake of RE 2. However I was under the impression that we were discussing games that we felt needed a reboot. Meaning to discard the established story and characters, and create a fresh new backstory. These remakes are taking everything that was so great about the original, wiping the dust off and giving it enhancements such as improved graphics, sound, tweaked controls, and just polishing off parts of the gameplay. Far from what is considered to be a reboot.
