He unleashed his trained whippet from it's slip-cord.The dog had the rabbit by it's neck within seconds,killing it swiftly.Jack Brody called off the dog,and went over to the dead rabbit and put it into his backpack.This 'll make a good dinner he thought. Back in his shack at the edge of the forest,Jack skilfully skinned the rabbit and sliced it up into meaty chunks with his hunting knife.He put the rabbit into a pot on his wood-burning stove,with some potatoes from his garden plot.He threw the offal to the dog,Elsa,who ate it ravenously."That's my good girl",he said.
the noise was coming behind the trees. it could be an animal or a man. his dog, elsa started to bark.
"Down Elsa",Jack commanded the dog.He went to the window.It was now dusk,and it was hard to see clearly.But there was movement in the trees,and Jack could make out the indistinct shape of a Brown Bear. .
In the sun streaming down on the glistening virgin white freshly fallen snow, Jack could see a kaleidoscope of bloody designs painting the white snow, seeming to come from the bear's injured paw, who was approaching closer.
Must've got it's paw caught in a bear trap,he thought.It was now dark.Jack lit his kerosene lamp and stepped out into the cold air.The bear growled and reard up on its hind legs.It was about ten metres away.The bear then let out what sounded like a cry of pain,and lay down in the snow,suddenly motionless.
Elsa was barking uncontrollably now, as jack watched the bear, which after a few minutes was having spasms in the snow;its entire body shaking in protest.....
Jack was hiding out,forty miles from home.It was his Dad's old shack.He believed he was safe here,that no one of any consequence knew of it.Jack was only seventeen.He was wanted by the McGarry brothers.He didn't do it though.Not really.Danny was the one with the matches and gasoline,and it was Danny's idea.
