I consider gambling to be the antithesis of hippydom. The motivations are greed and selfishness. Some people like the buzz of a casino. You can always eat at one the food outlets without engaging in gambling. I have done this before. I prefer the sound of a waterfall to that of poker machines.
makes sense, but we live in the 21st century, and everyone can decide for himself what he wants to do in this life. Maybe someone likes the hippy culture in general and gambling at the same time. Hippies don't have strict rules, and I think that being a hippy and a gambler at the same time is ok. For example, I consider myself a true hippy, but I must confess that sometimes I am gambling here, and I don't see anything wrong with it. Everyone is free to do whatever he wants!
A recent deleted post in this thread would have to be the most preposterous piece of spam I have ever come across. So he prefers gambling to any of the following: -intimate company. -any other type sex. - a good laugh. - a deep and meaningful conversation. - kindred company. - any type of reading. - watching a classic film. -debates. - a thought provoking radio program or podcast. -a game of chess with someone of your own level. -playing a video game. -eating delicious food. -eating out at an upmarket cafe or restaurant. -going to the theatre, art galleries and museums. -surfing, paddling a canoe or white water rafting. -connecting with nature; a walk in a city park; spending time in botanical gardens; walking in beautiful countryside; birdwatching; whale-watching; fishing. -painting pictures or photography. Clearly this man has no life. I will say my prayers for him. It would appear to me that regular gamblers take loses on the chin because they believe in Cinderella stories. One day things are going to come good for them. It does not happen to over 99% of gamblers.
If this is the case why not just play for matchsticks and avoid the social ills associated with gambling for money?
