I just saw Coupland's Generation X. I've never read it, but have been meaning to. Not to be random, but it got me thinking about age. What is it with attributing the adjective "disaffected" to a generation? All of us are disaffected...just in different ways. Our generations is, lol, consumed by consumerism. Worse, we are playing roles that we've been forced to play...or not. Anyhow, it got me thinking about the switching of roles. You know, I never wanted to play any of the roles that I was posited in. Maybe thats why I said Forced. I don't like to be persecuted and it seems as though that is always the way it goes. It got me thinking about a bleak future. There is no noble cause that I think I could hope to join that would obliterate all this wrongness. And I really, really just want to ignore it but I can't. So instead I go home to try to cry and sometimes I do. Idealism is something that has been fed by imagination...imagination is a lie because I can only feel my hand burning when its burning, right? I don't know, but I do know that I am scared. I want someone to save me from it all...and all of my appointed saviours refuse to stay where I put them. How hard is it to hold me and tell me everything is going to be allright? As hard as it is for me to do to you?

well intended but poorly reasoned 'nobel causes' have probably added more to 'this wrongness' then any intentions on the part of anyone to bring it about.

there is no greater good then the avoidance of causing harm.

you have a right to be scared. and a right not to be.

what i'm going to tell isn't that everything is going to be alright, nor that everything is going to be all wrong, but that everything IS going to go on being all different ways and no one way, however much forces, whether well intended or ill, attempt to make it so.

i refuse to call this bleak. for every punk that waves a knife in my face, i've stumbled unexpectedly on the wonders of gardens and the gratifications of exploring and building them.

if you look for anything to be ANY one way, in this you will find dissappointment. later you will be glad to have done so. been dissappointed that nothing turned out to be all one way after all that is.

hell even nazi death camps couldn't stop birds from singing or flowers from blooming. remember that when things get the worst.

remember too, when fortunes are at there best, that somewhere perhaps there is someone not shairing in them.

i really think you're seeing the same glass as half empty that i'm seeing as half full.

and it don't make diddly how either of us look at it, it's exactly the same amount of water in exactly the same glass.

What makes something worthy of sunshine and what makes something worthy of rain?
We can't be pessimistic because sunshine exists but rain also plagues us.

the future is going to be fun, even if there's also going to some crap along the way, and some, perhapse a lot of us, might not make it that far to see it when it gets to be.

that's what i think. the future is solar cells and batteries and electric motors and a hell of a lot fewer of us at some point, and the oil mostly gone, and burning anything only for cooking or staying warm.

it'll probably also mean a lot of walking and a lot fewer long trips, even as far as many people commute today. but the good news is this will be a good thing rather then a bad thing. because it means people will really see where they are, and understand the need to take care of it, because however they treat it, that's what the're going to have and have to live with. and i think when people realize that, they WILL take better, kinder, more interesting and maybe even more immaginative and innovative care of where they are and what the're surrounded by.
