Fundamentalist Atheism

Discussion in 'Agnosticism and Atheism' started by Lying in a field, Jan 25, 2006.

  1. Fundamentalist Christians are perhaps one of the greatest scurges to plague planet Earth. Their theories on irreducible complexity, Evolution (Doctine of Death) and 'prosperity doctrine' (get rich and give the church lots of money) are so unbelievably pragmatic and propagandist I want to puke.

But to what extent is religion truly harmful, especially if practiced with an open mind and in moderation?. I don't think a modern atheist scientist would hold nearly as much wisdom or genuine human kindess as an Australian Aboriginal elder, an animist.

Now I'm in no way implying that morality or kindess are things that can only be obtained from religion, but it confuses me as to why there are so many athiests absolutely bent on absolving religion from the face of the earth. Look at the christianity forums. So tell me, considering I am not religious at all, why some of you believe religion is so terribly harmful?

Did you ever think it was because there are so many who are religious which are absolutely bent on absolving members of other religions (and also including the non-religious) from the face of the Earth?

It's kind of, one of those situations, that is like, kill, or be killed. Except it's not to that extreme.

    ... yet ...

Edit: By the way, that's a nice screen capture of Eva Unit 01 in your sig.

  3. I totally get what you mean....but I just find the idea of becoming a "preachy athiest" bizarre, like we're sinking down to their level. Its like the battle of the science bashers v. the bible bashers. And maybe i'm too optimistic but don't you ever take inspiration from Ghandi's general attitude that different religious and existential beliefs can exist side by side in a peaceful society? Maybe thats just shit, but I think if everyone went by the anarchist idea that "Every man has the right to govern his own life" then the situation would be greatly improved. That way, everybody would have the right to choose their own religious beliefs without impeding the rights of others.

Oh, and its great to see an eva fan finally! Thjats my favourite scene, when unit 01 goes totally beserk and eats the Angel..heavy man, heavy. Are you hanging out for the live action movies supposedly starting in 2007?

I highly doubt most religions encourage killing people. If someone chooses to think in those sorts of ways (ie think that in some cases murder isn't morally wrong), it's the person who believes it, and the religion is just an external affirmation of that belief. I think that if there were no such thing as religion, people would just find that justification elsewhere. People will look for anything to bring substance to their beliefs and ignore all evidence that contradicts it.. and everyone does it, religion or no religion.

Back to the original topic, I guess I think, if scriptures are not taken too literally, religion itself is generally good. Imo, whatever the problem, it comes down to the person no matter what they believe in.

So don't fight in the war if you find virtue in not doing that.

Not all Christians are "bashy" and neither are all atheists.

Haha, yeah, that's one of my favourite scenes too. But, I don't think I would enjoy Evangelion in live action. :p

  6. yeah, i don't see any virtue, i am just confused as to why someone would. Just to satisfy my curiosity

I'm mostly just talking ato the ones who are, I have best friends who are atheists and best friends who are christian, both groups being brilliant open minded people who mostly care about humanity.

yeah, its a bit of a worry, but hideaki anno (the original writer and director), will be playing a large part in the production so I think it could come off ok.

Probably because they don't have enough wisdom to realize that there is no point in warring over it.

That's probably why they're best friends. The closed-minded don't make great comerades.

Eehhhhh ... honestly, Hideaki Anno has a temper, lol. When fans of Evangelion showed disgust for the way he ended the series (Eps 25 and 26), he created the End of Evangelion for them, but he made it just about *as bloody and twisted as possible* to spite them.

  9. Damn right.....i fucking loved the end of Evangelion, because only twisted freaks and geniuses actually understand it

Once again, flagrant misuse, abuse and ultimately senseless use of the term 'Fundamentalist Christians'.

Well done - Term is effectively rendered meaningless thanks to you.

  11. Tell me what you are then Erasmus?

Other than a lying, over-pious, over-zealous, pompous fundamentalist christian?

    Wow great comeback!
Its like you knew I was none of those things - so you said it to get me really offended.

    NO IM NOT!

Anyways, nice job on applying terms so irresponsibly that they no longer have any real meaning anymore.
Remember when that happened to 'Hypocrite' and now its pretty much the most ineffective meaningless word on the planet.

I bet actual Christian Fundamentalists are really happy with you.
Now the word has no power.
Not sure what we can call them now?

I prefer to use terms which actually apply to you in a real sense.
'Retard' being the responsible choice to describe you.
    'Tard' woud also do.

  13. Thats nice, and retard denotes what about my personality other than the fact that you think you're smarter than me? I already know these things.

You still haven't answered my question - What you are other than a lying, over-pious, over-zealous, pompous fundamentalist christian?

Have you stopped beating your wife?

  15. Where did that come from? Are you trying to be racist?

I'm basing my accusations on the garbage you spew out in your threads, not stereotypes, I know lots of good christians. Now answer the fucking question.

    When it comes to fanatics on either side of the fence, I think it comes down to fear LIAF;

One side has a desperate need to prove christianity is true because deep down they're afraid it might not be.
The other side has a desperate need to prove it isn't because, deep down, they're afraid it could be.
