One of my all time top bands! It's such a shame that all most people know of them is "All Right Now"... Granted, that's a quite wonderful song, but there's so much more to the band... SO much! When you delve back into their catalogue you'll find out! On the surface it's just simple, straightforward blues/rock, but there's just so much feel and passion in it all that it just works so well... Kossoff's blistering guitar... Fraser's sublime bass lines... Kirke's "in the pocket" beats... and that voice! ... My god what a voice Paul Rodgers has.. Anyway, that's enough of me eulogizing about one of my favourite, and one of the great forgotten bands of the british blues rock boom... It's now time to check them out for yourself!
just my honest opinion...... I guess it might be getting exposed to bad company for so many years, ad nauseum on FM AOR
Yeah, but Free was a different thing altogether... He was so much more soulful and gritty than the more "smooth" approach with Bad Company..
Amen! Someone actually recognizing the brilliance of Free! With a massive song such as All Right Now, which i'd assume a lot of people would know... It's a surprise that Free aren't better appreciated..
My Brother Jake is a great song, and Fire and Water too. More people I know are getting into them since Paul Rodger's joined Queen.
I've been heavily into Free for years and I always get baffled when I mention them and get that empty look from people, so much to say... "Who?"
...."You've always been a good friend of mine, and you're always saying farewell.....but the only time that you're satisfied is with your feet in the wishing well".... Led Zepellin and Free were the two greatest rock bands....ever. Nothing has come remotely close, which is pitiful bearing in mind the heyday of those two bands! Paul Rodgers had, arguably the better rock voice than even the awesome Robert Plant.
Since making these posts I have actually managed to see Paul Rodgers live in concert and I have to say his voice is holding up remarkably well! AND it was to promote the Free DVD & CD releases of last year, so the set was heavy on Free songs! Needless to say, I was singing along like a freak..
paul rodgers has a pretty cool tribute album called muddy water blues if anyone hasn't heard of it..but long before that free was definitely one of the better bands of the time
