Hello all you uni buffs out there...just wondering...have any of you done a foundation course?

Just I'm really bored in Devon and as I said before I was thinking of moving up to Lampeter. Then a friend of mine suggested that rather than wait to go straight into uni next year...why not just apply for a late foundation course in Lampeter which meant that I could live in Lampeter and not work, but still do something to stimulate my mind etc.

Would appreciate any information you could give me regarding these types of courses etc.

Aha! Yes I have. Last September I enrolled to do a Science Foundation Year at a uni in London (due to the fact I wanted to do physics BUT didn't have a maths a-level...)
All I can say is it is a load of fun and I would definitely reccommend doing it,
Pm me if you have any questions :)

we started running a foundation course in my dept last year (I'm a uni lecturer). It seemed to go pretty well, most of the students were keen and motivated, which you don't always find on actual degree courses ...

Hippy Girl and Joel went to Lampeter, they might be good people to talk to if you can get hold of them. I don't know much about foundation courses, but from what I can tell they're ways to get into uni if you don't have A Levels or don't have the required grades/subjects and don't want to go back to school for another two years. If you do have the required A Levels for the course already, I'd have thought taking a foundation course would be a waste of money, assuming you have to pay tuition fees as normal....

I disagree, I had the impression they would be easy, but learning 3 new a-levels in 1 year instead of 2 and having to get above 80% in all 3 to get onto your degree is certainly not easy.

Well maybe it depends what sort of foundation course it is. If you're doing a foundation for a course in biochemistry you might have a lot of catching up to do but if it's for a mickey mouse subject like English literature it will be piss easy:)

my friend's daughter is training to be a doctor, as part of her course she did the equivalent of a BSc in biochemistry in one year. Makes you sick doesnt it.

Actually no, it's not a waste of time. It will give me something to do over the next year without having to work a full-time job and before I actually go and spend 4 years of my life at uni. And considering I haven't been on the other side of education for a good 2 years or so, it's a warm-up.

As for advice about Lampeter uni, that's not necessary. As I've said before, I have friends who already attend the uni and I've visited etc. It's more info about foundation courses, experiences etc.
