if you are looking for an ULTRA LIBERAL school, shimer college is the place for you. i came here in april of this year to visit and right away i knew it was home. i love it here. it's really small but all the better because of it. everyone pretty much has the freedom and liberty to choose their own way of life. no crazy rules like at your normal universities. i LOVE it here and i will be a die hard promoter of this school; that's how great it is. go visit the webpage if you are interested or just do it for the hell of it.. seriously, you won't be disappointed. www.shimer.edu
it looks like a cool school! i really wish i could move and leave my school and go to a diff. one but my husband's job is here and he cant really leave it right now. so sad....
I'm curious what you mean by "no crazy rules like at your normal universities"? I'm not sure what crazy rules I'm being forced to conform to... Honestly, it looks like it would be good for some people. Looking at the list of core courses & the reading list for each, however, I think I would hate about half of the classes there. I was tortured with more than enuf Shakespeare in high school, thank you very much!
trust me, most universities have crazy rules. at least most of the ones i know about do. such as no members of the opposite sex in your room after midnight on weekdays and 2am on weeknights.. that's one of many i had at loyola university. shimer is like no other school. they give the students freedom to choose which is not the case at many universities. i've experienced your typical university and shimer, and i must say i like shimer a hell of a lot more.
I don't know about what is typical, but for the school I go to and the schools my friends, and other people I have talked to go to, there are no such rules, not to say that your school isn't great, but I would say with that issue there are lots of schools that don't care at all about who's in your room or at what time.
ok well that is one rule i mentioned.. there were lots more.. trust me. i like the fact that i can smoke pot in my room without having to hide it.. hell we just leave the door open and nobody cares. in dorms at alot of universities, this is far from the case! plus, i didn't just mention the rule about who's in the room at what time as a rule of every normal university; that was simply an example of an insane rule, at a school i went to before here, that adults should not have to abide by. anyway, for the long run, this school still kicks loyola's ass.
Loyola is a Catholic uni, of course it has "morals" codes. geez. State colleges' amount of in loco parentis will depend on local climate more than institutional climate, and once you get out of the dorm, the rules relax considerably. I wish I could afford private college for my son (I'm a state college grad myself) for his pre-law. (pre-law, yet, at 13!)
It looks rather nice, but it does not even mention international students, which means that it is rather out for me.
yes but i also knew of people who went to state schools that had the same rules as loyola. i know because it's jesuit the rules are going to be more strictly enforced, but like i said, i know people at state schools with the same rules. and yes, when you are out of dorms there aren't really any rules. i was mostly speaking of living conditions because these things are also important when you decide on an institution to attend.
well, you should request information! they will send you a catalogue and information on what you need. the website isn't terrific; it's pretty hard to navigate. anyway, just request info!
alright. even that would work. if you seriously like what you see on the website, it would be worth it for you to look into going to school here. it's a wonderful environment
What out-of-school activities does the town/ school offer? How are the people there, in general? The town itself... what is there to do?
the town itself sucks but it's only 40 minutes from chicago and there's a train station about 2 blocks away... and chicago is lovely
yeah i used to go to a uni like that before i went to a harder and more known uni. those universities usually are easy as hell to get into. the courses are usually taught liberally. it is usually not diffecult to pass the courses. i used to get lots of As and i am not a strait A person. the fun of learning is much, much bigger than anywere else. the problem however might be that you might have some diffeculty trieng to find a job if that university isnt known very widely. and such private universities also tend to be very expensive. so i would suggest that one spends some years in a university like the one that you were suggesting, but then spend some time in a more well known university.
