Asking people if they want to check their carbon monoxide levels is a good idea. I'd like to know, but am too lazy to visit my doctor. If I passed somebody in the street offering to tell me, I'd say: Yes please. Then asking me if I want help or advice, I'd also say: Yes please. People are very very lazy, any help is a good thing. If your point is: Why is the government attempting to get us all off ciggies, then the easy answer is: It is bad for your health. Hence: The Department Of Health. 'They will have to be careful when approaching smokers in case they become aggressive, but we are interested to see how it pans out. If someone says no, they will not pressure them to take the test.' Enforced test? hell no. Printing my name and results in the local rag? hell no (how else would it be humiliating?) What "civil liberties" are being infringed, if it is voluntary?
Same here. Well done. I'd like it that people do what they have to do behind closed doors, and bothering nobody, and that includes air born smokes. Smoke tobacco in the pub, I have no problem with this. On the street, then I have a problem.
In a country where we have universal health care, it is the government's concern. They pay for every stroke, heart attack, emergency trip in an ambulance, and chemo treatment you require. In fact, they have a vested interest to alleviate the costs and burdens bogging down the health care system.
There's a smoking ban here in Ontario. You can't smoke outside a lotttt of buildings, there are absolutely no "smoking" sections anymore in any restaurants, etc... http://www.hrmguide.net/canada/law/ontario-smoking-ban.htm I dislike it... Mainly because I'm a smoker and I enjoy not freezing my ass off every time I have a cigarette in public...
I have a good friend from there. I've visited twice and am planning another next year, hopefully. Just curious. Thanks.
that may be true. but you'd think the more people that died, the less they would - ultimately - pay. so everything evens out.
They banned cigarrettes indoors here a couple years ago (when I was a smoker), and I liked it. I never minded going outside to smoke..... plus when you can smoke indoors, it's not only rude to those who hate being around it, but it also leads to a lot of chainsmoking.
Smoking bans are bullshit It should be up to the owner of the pub if its going to be a smoking or non-smoking establishment
Not so. The aging population is increasing. People are living 20 years longer than they did a hundred years ago. Health care has developed to help make people live longer, and thus the cost and utilization of health care services has increased. People who smoke are more likely to have a slew of health care related symptoms associated with smoking. From anxiety, to throat cancer, to diabetes, to heart attacks. It's all a burden and cost to the system if there are an increase rate of unhealthy citizens seeking medical attention. Death and birth rates are inconsequential to the demands of provided health care necessary.
So...what else should we ban? C'mon, hypocrites...belly up and show yourselves. Do you drive a car or use any form of public transport that has emissions? Why don't we ban those? Do you use chemicals to clean your home? I bet you just flush those or rinse them down the drain. Should we ban those? What else should the state tell me I can and can not do? All so you can feel safe and, God forbid...make your clothes smell.
