Bobby Fischer has been captured and is currently being held in Japan: http://edition.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/asiapcf/07/16/fischer.japan/index.html To be honest, I do not agree with this guy's opinions; he's an eccentric, has lived an unorthodox and isolated life, and this has led him to express irrational opinions. Still, he's the best chess player in the world, and his only crime was playing a few games of chess where the U.S. gov't didn't want him to.
Free Bobby Fischer! I really don't know that much about him. I saw that movie in 6th grade. But they want to put him in prison for playing chess? If he'd been over there selling preschoolers into prostitution, I could understand them making such a big deal about it.....
Okay, I may have glossed over the details a bit, but he violated a U.S. sanction against the then Yugoslavia (now Serbia). Yugoslavia had instigated the ethnic war in the region, so the U.S. initiated a sanction. Fischer, who had basically disappeared in 1975, subsequently went to Yugoslavia to play Bosris Spassky in 1992. The U.S. government told him not to, he told them to get lost; he played and won ($3 million), and ever since the U.S. government has been looking for him. There was much speculation as to where he was; I heard that he was in Hungary, but it turns out he was in Japan for at least the three years. Bobby Fischer was the greatest chess player, but his reputation is now tarnished due to his mental instability. He has a profound hatred for the U.S., and after 9/11 he reportedly called into a radio station in the Phillipines to state how glad he was that the U.S. had been attacked. He has also made anti-Semetic remarks on several occasions, I assume through the same radio station. I gather he subscribes to this whole Jews-secretly-run-the-world conspiracy nonesense.
