what are the typical costs for supermarket foods/fast foods eg, bread, choco bars, bottles of water, crisps, pot noodles? please say they sell pot noodles!
First take the percent difference between your currency and the accepted currency of where you are traveling. ie. 1 canadian dollar is equal to 0.67 cents in Euros that is a 33% difference. Soooo, if a pop costs you 1 dollar in Canada it will roughly be around 1.50 euros? this is how i usually figure it out. Rough estimates anyway.
I absolutely suck at math or anything with numbers for that matter, but shouldn't that be the other way round? So 1 euro being ± 1,5 canadian dollars?
I thought the question was whats the cost of groceries when bought in supermarket and not how to calculate currency differences. And yeah, Velvet is right. BTW, hello everyone...coming to A'dam in late August to stay for 2 years (graduate course on UvA).
Cheap foods in Holland: All Dutch Cheese! Recommend Old Amsterdam -sharp, Maaslander - medium, Jonge Gouda - mild. Wine! All Dairy Eggs Bread (used to be much cheaper b4 Euro) Chocolate (Buy the big AH brand bars, less than 2 euros. Go to Puccini's for the ultimate chocolate splurge) Most food at the Albert Cupy Markt Dutch Hot house tomatoes (the same ones that cost a fortune everywhere else) Dutch Cucumbers (ditto) Falafel Kaasbrot? (cheese bread - like a pizza. Get them fresh at bakeries with other toppings too) Frites! French fries are thick & crispy & cheap. Best thing is you get a wide variety of toppings. Look for the Belgian style places, especially the ones with the long lines of Dutch queueing & drooling. Ice cream shakes - Coffeeshops make these very tasty for around 3 euro & change. It's really good to know what to eat there, cause you WILL get the munchies bad!
thank you NEMESIS for mentioning FEBO in my absence. also for those heading over there from North America, beer is cheaper than soft drinks at restaurants and snack bars.
I purposely didn't mention Febo. Skip the Febo if you care about what you eat. But it's probably fun to purchase your pre-prepared food from a cage, no? How long has it been sitting there? I remember Horn & Hardart in NYC in the 1950's & 60's when such a place with food in cubicles was considered to be the "future" of food dispensing. At least they had a wide variety of edibles, and a place to sit & eat it. Back then it was considered a novelty, today it's just an anachronism.
if i could remember the 50's and 60's i'd probably watch what i eat too febo is for the young and restless, the bold and beautiful
That was one experience I missed out on while in Amsterdam. I saw FEBO, but was a bit hesitant. I know what the food is like around here that comes in little cubicles, so I figured it was safer to avoid it. I will probably do it next time for the novelty of it and see how it compares to the crap back home.
The secret at FEBO is to watch the employess fill the little windows for the freshest food. I've tried most of the windows and the fried food is pretty average although the mini burgers and kaasoufle are OK. My favorite FEBO food is the chicken from the counter as well as the frites and chocolate shakes. Centrum fast food is expensive. Two slices of pizza and a canned soda is 8 Euros. For resonably priced fast food I love Falafels Maoz at Centraal Station plaza and at Muntplein. Albert Heijn prices are significantly cheaper. I live near San Francisco which has some of the highest prices generally in the USA and it seems to me that Amsterdam fast food, restaurant, and super market prices are even higher than I'm used to at home.
Yeh, I don't mind FEBO, it's quite a novelty. Your right Larry, the secret is to catch the freshest food being stacked, better still get it cooked fresh. I just wouldn't eat it all the time but when your on holiday it's quick, convenient and dare I say it actually quite tasty. Roll on ''Frikandel Speciaal'', not tried that one yet.
"Albert Heijn prices are significantly cheaper" - Never thought I'd live to see that day! What have you been smoking? Actually they did have a price war a year ago cause they were losing customers big time, with the Dutch boycotting them. I'm sure if they have the lowest prices, they'd get the Dutch back in there again. They used to have the best selection and good quality items (esp their chocolate!).
actually, the price war is still happening.. And if you don't buy the brand names AH is on of the cheapest.. But in the centre prices are always higher..
What is it with all the foreigners fearing FEBO? You cant leave Holland without having tasted at least one kroket or frikandel.
The whole prize war thing sucked, they used to have everything, now its just another average supermarket.
and occasionally for fat ugly drunks like me! mafuman, you really remember horn & hardart? what else can you tell me about it? what kinds of people did you run into there? how was the food, what was your favorite item there? i have a historical interest see love s g collins
