what can you do about flys biting the dogs ears. I had a salve that was working and the flys I think have adapted to it. one online vet says Pyrethrins I was thinking of making my own.. pyrethrin is in a few insect sprays I got laying around, with no other additives. what if I mixed it with some lotion. The ears are scabby, and bloddy sometimes... stupid dog could be in the house.. hes a idiot. idk...
I would say you have a good idea which is very sound, since there is a product on the market for this same purpose called "Pet Guard Gel" which uses pyrethrins too as a primary active ingredient. I'm not sure if it would work on dogs, but I have used Farnam Swat Fly Repellent which I get at the local farm supply on my horses' ears with really good results. I had to laugh about your dog having full access to your house and yet preferring to be outside, since I have been there too with a few of my dogs!
I made a lotion today out of a flea and tick drip stick..it has pyrethrin in it, I mixed it with skin so soft lotion and some glycerin to make it more liquidy.. hope it works... I dont think it burned him, but he shook it off cause it was wet... it says pyrethrin is organic and it degraded by sunshine, but harmful to insects. his one ear is worse than the other, must be the way hes laying.. He has no fleas. or nothing else I care well for him..
I had some product that bought at a feed supply store, it was for horses and I just ran out of it. I got it a few years ago but it lasted for a long time. After reading the data on pyrethrin I figured Id make something myself. The Flea Drops I had contained pyrethrin, I figured it couldnt hurt. I mixed it with some lotion and human Ear ache oil glycerin. And it worked really well in a short time. His ears are fluffy and full of fur now.
My parents use Skin-So-Soft spray by Avon (the green one) and swear it works to keep flies away from them and their dogs... it's worth a try if nothing else is working.
this does work but over time in my wooded area the flies become ammune to it.. It still ok for reducing fleas.
