The day I got my first driver's license was the day I felt free for the first time. I could finally be alone with my girlfriend at the drive-in movie, parked in a secluded spot, or just driving around with her cuddled up next to me. I even enjoyed driving the family car to run errands for my family. Now I almost dread getting into my pickup truck because of the awful traffic everywhere. Plus, my wife won't cuddle up next to me when I drive, and all the drive-ins are gone.
Know what you mean I was 17 when I got my driver’s license 25 years ago, and I still consider it one in a long list of milestones. I could finally borrow my parent’s car (with them actually knowing and approving) …lol…. Hotwater
Got it on my first try. Ah the suprise on my driving teacher's face when he heard after the exam Priceless!
I had my temporary motorcycle licence first before the temporary car licence. I had to do the Top Gun thing for awhile with the girls n the motorbike. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CU4eIdKYkmA
got my full licence february of 1992 couldnt afford car insurance until september though never stopped driving since
I started driving when I was 14. I could only drive to work because I wasn't driving legally. Which meant I still took the bus to school. But my parents let me drive since I was contributing to the groceries and saving up to get my own car. So my first 2 years driving was a paranoid nightmare as I always had to watch for the cops and drive like a nun. By the time I got my learner's permit I could drive pretty well and had to parallel park almost everyday. I got pulled over by a cop in San Anselmo, wearing my work uniform and I knew I couldn't flash a learner's permit, so I searched the car up and down and said I must have left my wallet at home. He freakin let me go after bitching at me for about 10 minutes. Then I finally got my license, and magically became an oinker magnet. I got 6 tickets before I was 17. Two for speeding, 1 for an improper turn, a headlight went out and I got popped for parking a few times. Then I joined the Navy and didn't drive for a while, till I got to Hawaii. Once again I became a magnet for the fuzz, but then, all sailors were. Instead of the freedom I hear so much about, I was getting genuine oppression for driving until I was in my late 20s. That's when I bought an Audi 5000 turbo. It was so nice that I drove like my grandmother. But it was a really sweet ride and had reclining seats. Living as I do now, in the shadow of Atlanta, all I know is gridlock unless I take back roads. So I got a 2 seater that handles like a dream and do a virtual slalom everyday to and from work. Since I'm rarely over the speed limit by much (there's something to be said about getting from 0-60 in a matter of seconds) I don't attract oinkers. They're too busy trying to make career busts on the freeways or directing traffic around schools. The rest of the time they're nowhere to be seen, lazy fucks. Kids today don't seem to understand the freedom angle as much. Elroy put it off till he was 17 and Judy (Shaniqua) is only getting a license so she'll have an ID for traveling. Go figure!
Applied for a learner's permit in 1973... They sent me a driver's license instead, been driving ever since. Never had to take a driving test.
i got it on my 16th birthday. i lived in the middle of nowhere, so it was especially liberating since i couldn't walk, or really even bike anywhere worth going. yeah, this is the only thing that really baffles me about kids today. when i was 16, all my friends got their licenses as soon as possible. now, most of the teenagers i know don't even bother until after they finish high school. sure there are. maybe not one long bench like that, but my truck has a design similar to that below, which is perfectly fine for cuddling (as long as you put up the armrest first). ?
I had my learners permit for 2 years before getting my license at 18. I went on a lot of road trips my senior year. I'm actually am driving less now than I ever have. Running and biking are the freest way to travel when you consider all the expenses and liability. It's also more enjoyable imo.
I didn't feel all that "free" since I got my license long before I got a car and was thus dependent on the old "borrowing the car." I did, however, feel grown up. I really felt like I accomplished something "adult."
I got my license on 4/20, that always sticks out in my memory even though I didn't partake then And the second day I had my license I ventured out into a heavily trafficked area, it was my first time in traffic because my mom made me stick to country roads when she was teaching me to drive. I panicked turning left at a redlight and ended up running the light and was promptly pulled over by a very nice cop who took pity on me and didnt give me a ticket since I had my license all of about 18 hours at that point One of my favorite things to do when I was a teenager was drive around rural roads, I would do this with my best friend for hours and we would talk and cruise. But gas prices really went through the roof in my late teens/early twenties and put a stop to that. And now gas is really cheap again but I absolutely despise driving now and would never drive around just for fun anymore
My first car was one of these. The back hatch opens and the seats fold down. This is good for alone time with ladies when you still live with your mommy. The back doors only opened from the outside and you had to floor it just to stay at 65 MPH on a highway but it was all mine and it was free.
I remember my first non-drivers license ID. It was on an unusual very hot April when i was 18. Never learned to drive or took any driving test. My so called "freedom" never depended on whether i drove or not. Having a car seemed to be more of an unnecessary big expense for me. Limiting my so call freedom to explore more further. I'd rather save the money and see more of the earth. I've learned to get around without the use of a car. Even when living down south i never drove.
I remember my first car. VL commodore. Sold for $150. I remember the day I got my lisence fully, that first drive to pick my girl up was so weird not having anyone in the front seat. I think I had a smile from ear to ear. Then I realised you gotta fill the thing up, which costs money.
And I remember decked it out with a 12" sub. Whole neighbourhood had to hear the bass drop listening to the wicked shit, Q Strange!
i think i was already pretty much free by the time i first got one. i don't remember for sure when it was when i did. i know i never had a vehicle until i was in the air force, somewhere around when i was 20. i know my dad never had a car until my last year of high school, and my mom never did learn to drive or even want to.
