I'm doing an EPQ project at school and chose to do it n the 'Significance of film in films primarily focusing on Gangsters/ Thrillers.'
I'm a pretty big film buff but if people could give me some advice on what films to use and mention in my projec I'd be very grateful.
Also, if they have any analysis and theories on the significance of the food's use please tell me and I'll add you to the thank you page and bibliography on the final page :)

if we're talking gangster films; food as people people as food etc, then this is a must-include:

    (upside down)

    city of god:
in city of god we're dealing with two main thing in regards to food- its all about juxtaposition. right from the opening, the chicken scene- people as food as victims etc BUT also food preparation juxtaposed with violence (both on-screen and in the editing) shows the violence as being, like food, part of the everyday, situates it as part of the snapshot of urban life.

Pay attention to the dinner tables- young children gathered round as if for a meal, but rarely any food, mostly guns and drugs. also, pay attention to the complete lack of mothers- the dining room in city of god has become a hyper masculine space, subverted by violence spilling of the streets and into the domestic space.

    amorres perros:

another good film for the juxtaposition of sex and violence with food. best to pay attention Not to the food itself, but the places that it is prepared (the domsetic spaces and the street food- dogs) and times and manners in which it is eaten. This film is easiest approached as being a sudden collision of class politics. food, sex and violence go hand in hand, all representing the visceral, carnal side of human nature. the richer you are, the more you attempt to distance yourself (usually symbolically) from these three things, but they'll still find you in the end. pay particular attention if food is consumed on the street ( i can't remember if it is or not) the street is where the violence happens, the richer characters spend their on-screen time as far away from it as possible, behind gates, windows, in cars etc.

oh yeah, and in the godfather oranges are harbingers of doom!

Top man. Great help that was. Love Amores Perros. haven't seen it in years!
Gael Benial finally hit it big lately which is great. Do you know of any specialist film analysis websites that would have food analysis. I need evidence for my statements and explanations
