I have read books before that I just could not put down. This wasn’t my case with Fifty Shades of Grey in particular. People are saying so though, and when I stopped to watch the TV the women were saying too they could not put it down, that’s why it sparked my curiosity on top of needing something to read. Well, so Fifty Shades Of Grey is not one of them, but I still would recommend it (for open minded people, of course, as the sexual reference might not be for everyone’s taste). Some readers say the book is “unputdownable”. However, I would not push it that far. You can read a more detailed review here http://www.prisqua.com/3174/fifty-shades-of-wasted-metaphors/
I find it amusing and telling that the love interest of the protagonist had to be a millionaire in order for this book to bring bdsm into the mainstream.
Some male friends have been reading it. They say, of course, just to see what all the fuss is about...
I think it is a part of a wave of women that are getting in to pornographic type of media. Magic Mike, 50 Shades - there's more to come and it is weird, because the general female response to guys watching porn usually tends to be 'Gross!' but now that they have their tailor made versions, they broadcast how much they love this stuff and how hot this stuff is! I don't tell everyone on Facebook when I'm about to look at porn, why do I have to hear about all the great sex-fiction women are reading? (By no means do I want to convey that 50 shades is 'great', I've read excerpts here and there on the internet and the writing in it is piss poor)
It seems that a lot of people just haven't been aware that so many "romance novels" have for years been full of explicit sex. The only difference between them and porn is that in the romance genre, there is always a happy ending (no, not that kind of happy ending, unless it is). Then, for some reason unknown to me, Fifty Shades got undeserved publicity and the clueless got all worked up, thinking it was something new.
I've been getting lots of thumbs up for it too... from women of course. But I have yet to see it for myself.
I was so surprised to learn that it is actually twilight fanfiction.... i thought people were joking when they told me that, turns out it genuinely was an online fanfic and she just changed the names...
I've found what little bit of it to be rather poor -- your average sexualized fanfiction, written for the reader to put herself in the driver's seat. I travel a lot and there wasn't a single airport I went through that wasn't full of women reading it and newsstands selling it. For stuff along the same lines (and every bit as explicit) that is far better-written, I'd recommend looking at some Victorian erotica. There's a lot of amazing stuff out there, and I've got quite a bit in case anyone would like to try reading.
I've read it. It's okay, it isn't brilliantly written, but passable. I think women are just now admitting they like porn and this book is an out for the mainstream to do what some women have been doing for years.
Dreadfully written, full of waffle, and I cannot work out why ALL my friends are still in love with Mr Grey having read it. Grey gets sexually excited by punishing women who resemble his "crack whore" mother becauase she treated him appaulingly. Yes, he's turned on by the thought of fucking up his mother. I stopped reading right there, about half way through the trilogy. Maybe I'll start again at some point, if I ever feel like wasting time on poor fiction again.
I read all three books, found them really boring to be honest. It's just repetitive and not as good as everyone made it out to be!
My wife has read these on her kindle. She loved them. I read the first but was left a bit wanting. If im reading erotica it needs to be something from the Black Lace collection. Cassandra is a good character
I read first 2 and started the 3rd there ok but the sex parts are kind of repetitive I read through those part real quick I was more interested on the decisions the characters were going to make i hope the 3rd is a bit different. 50 shades is very much like the movie "Secretary"
I've read all the books and saw the movie Secretary. Secretary is about a secretary who's boss wants to dominate her and does. I do like the spankings over the desk scene though. Fifty Shades was good, I was sooo infatuated with Christian and the way he spoke. Couldn't care less about the sex scenes, they were boring! But, over all, cute/sexy story line. Romance Yes Erotic No
I read all three books and liked them. It's probably not cool to be a guy and liking these books when all other guys seem to pooh-pooh them, but there it is. Admittedly, I haven't read many other books of this type, so I don't have anything really to compare it to.
